How does a film like this MAKE money?

Let's say for instance that the film only cost 1,000,000 bucks to make. Do they then sell 100,000 DVD's to pay for it, or do the Oceans movies always pay for fuilms like these?
I dunno, I liked the movie, I just don't understand how it could be made. I think it's a good question.

Well, 100,000 DVDs world-wide is a pretty negligible number. Heck, there are probably that many DVD rental places in America alone. In addition, Showtime obviously paid some amount for the rights, since that's where I saw it. Heck, maybe it even made money (though you'll never get any studio exec to ever admit that ANY movie made money).

known actors, a engaging plot, a decent trailer. if your wondering how this movie could make money, or how was this movie could be made, you haven't seen some of the REALLY bad stuff that gets financed and, sadly, probably makes a profit.

anyway, i liked this movie.... because of that i'll check out the other movie caan wrote and directed. people like him in his other things, they want to see something he made. hundreds of millions of people in america, billions of people in the world... that is how indie movies make money.

I don't think Caan made this movie for money. I can't wrap my mind around that thought. I believe he made the movie to prove he can make one. Nothing more, nothing less.
As far as making money, I believe producers will make more money from rentals than purchases in the long run. Sounds hard to believe, then consider the popularity of the ever growing wi-fi and online rental companies such as netflix, itunes rental, huluplus, etc.

One day, I will be successful for the rest of my life.
