So is it any good?

The trailer looks "edgy." That's cool, but means zip. What I'm more concerned with is if Caan can write a script and hire someone to edit his movie. Anyone see this thing yet? Caan's been funny in his roles and got some cool talent to star opposite him, so this could be a nice midweek theater trip.

I went to an advanced screening about a month ago. It's awsome. I was skeptical at first, not being too big a fan of Scott Caan to begin with. But I gotta hand it to him here. His performance was very fresh, as was Shawn Hatosy, and, as always, Jeff GOldblum. Its got its funny moments, but its more of a drama to me. You really start to feel for Shawn Hatosy's character, even though you know you shouldn't. Especially at the end. Trust me on this one, you DO NOT know where this film is going. I'm not sure when its going to be released, but when it does, I'll go see it again. Hope that helps.

excellent, thanks. and thanks 2x for not giving anything away.

Well, I finally saw it, and I'm really happy for Scott that he wrote and directed his first feature film, but overall it wasn't a strong picture. It dragged for a bit in the middle and end, and frankly... **SPOILLER***

...killing his character was a bit weak both in concept and in the way it was done. I guess I should have seen it coming, because it makes perfect sense that a crazy beautiful person is both too good for this world and doesn't fit into the main character's future any longer, but the end was so weak, especially since he was killed by some no-named hispanic thief. At least he could have gone out killing the drug dealer or something. People always forget that HOW you die factors into your character makeup as much (or more) as IF you die.

And honestly, I couldn't tell if Kelly Lynch was attempting to act like a well-meaning but uneducated blue-collar gal, or simply cannot act.

Anyway, props to Scott for a sometimes fun and interesting flik, but not a very good film. Scott's got tons of charisma and can act for years, but needs to spend more time putting together a stronger script if he wants to make movies.

Well, he wasn’t a “no name Hispanic thief” The character’s name was Rubin, who knew Redhead, who Dallas was occasionally banging and ultimately hooked Dallas and Rubin together so they could rob Bear.

But I agree that the ending death was kind of strange. But my reason was the way it was shot. SPOILERS:

The first shot shows Christian crashing through the ceiling, Rubin reacting and shooting Dallas, Dallas reacting and shooting Rubin and all three of them land on the floor. Bear meanwhile has this really cool reaction where he waves his gun back and forth, unsure of what to do, because he look absolutely shocked about what just happened.

THEN they show the sequence again only this time has his arms in front of him and is watching everything as cool as a cucumber. I didn’t understand the continuity there unless it was suppose to be Bear essentially playing everything back in his head. Then I guess after absorbed everything he would be as cool, seeing as he virtually killed two birds with one stone without having to do anything.

As far as wishing Dallas would’ve died differently, I think the ending was befitting for his character.

Dallas was a seemed to have this idea of how things should be and it doesn’t always work out like that. Rusty was growing tired of getting into fights and going to jail and realized it was time to stop. The difference between Dallas and Rusty is when Rusty said he was going to quit, he did it. Dallas on the other hand always struck me as the kind of guy who would always keep getting into trouble, and there would always be “Just this last job”. The only thing I can glorify Dallas for was that he was a good friend. But he didn’t really deserve some glorified, last tough guy move death. He was a guy who constantly was getting himself into trouble, and this time he was way over his head. Perfect for that particular character.

And I also agree that for some reason I wasn’t particularly impressed with Kelly’s acting or Jeff’s for that matter. I don’t know why…I think they’re both great actors.

I roared, and I rampaged, and I got bloody satisfaction.

How does Hotosy's character expect to be a rodeo star (at 24), when his mother has kept him away from horses since he was 13? I liked this film, but there were some inconsistencies, and the Christian character was beyond irritating.

reply

well, the whole rodeo star thing doesn't bother me at all. As a whole, the film was great.

If anything had a chance at ruining it, it was Christian by far. I so agree.

Why on earth did Caan have this guy talk with that voice? Every time I heard it, it made me want to punch a baby.

reply

I absolutley loved this movie, and I don't know why. It was one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. I thought Christian's voice was funny and he had some of the best lines in the movie.

I thought the Christian character (other than poor decision to have him jumping through a roof at the end) was hilarious throughout.

I really liked the movie. Also I think the way Scott's character died was perfect, because he thought he was invincible, yet he ended up dying by from something he didn't see coming. He probably figured he would one day go out in a blaze of glory, but it just goes to show it rarely happens that way.

I have a ton of respect for people who write, direct, and act in their own movie. It shows guts to put themselves out there like that knowing that not everyone will like it. I think Scott did a great job with this movie.

"Christian" was annoying in the extreme - the actor who played him seemed like he was doing a bad Adam Goldberg impression.

That’s it!! That’s exactly it! Thank you!!

I didn't like it. It was slow, not much action and too cliche. I called the ending early in the movie...Not very good.

reply

I didn't care for this movie either. It was very predictable. Yeah I get the concept that while Dallas and Rusty are together they are unstoppable but as Rusty decides to better his life, Dallas keeps down the same path which leads to inevitable doom and he dies...yeah I get it...but it's been done so many times, I dont think it needed to be done again. It's art imitating life...yeah yeah yeah.

Come on! It's at least a "pretty good" movie! Especially for a first attempt at it as a writer and director. At the very least the acting was way above average and the diologue as well. If the plot wasn't original well at least it was believable and entertaining.

It aint easy to make a movie and this was NOT half bad.

Well done, Scott Caan. Right on, brother...

I think a lot of the people who replied on this post have completely forgotten what kind of things you go through when you're at the age the two main characters are. How old are you people anyways? I think Scott Caan nailed it pretty good in this film. Maybe what did it for me is the fact that one of my best friends is so much like "Dallas" it's downright scary. We're both in our mid-thirties now, and he still does stupid and crazy things all the time, while I've really mellowed out and gotten more sensible. I thought it had a great combination of comedy and drama to it. Thumbs up here!

Good film.

Yes, Caan is hot as is the other boy.

Goldblum can rot in the backyard for all I care.

I love the 'cowboy' gay theme throughout the movie. It's touching to see two men who love each other love each other without resorting to gay sex.

Oh yeah, the jew guy is a target to be shot. Over the top and such.

But the two boys, good story. Filmed with no special effects, just dialog and human emotion. Somewhat rare lately, that is at least not a basement backroom garbage film.

Good job Caan boy.

Now come here and get naked for me! ;-)

The Christian character (and the actor playing him) pretty much ruined the movie. An obvious homage to Midnight Cowboy's Ratso Rizzo (even the trademark limp) was so film-school phony that it killed any natural momentum and credibility.

reply

Good call about ratso, hadn't picked that up.
