Time Warp and Strange Soundtrack

Ok I am looking at this movie now. AM I having some time warp problem? Ok what war was Caramel or Carmel boyfriend going off to? When I first saw it thought it was WW2, then I thought it was the Korean war. But looking at the clothes and the ages it had to be Vietnam. Why because when you see her write about Rosa her niece she was around 8 then you see her now. How can her brother be the father of her niece if he was just a kid when the boyfriend went away. If it was WW2 or Korea those daughters would be in their late 40's to 50's.

And what about the music. I like Latino music just like the next person but why were they playing Latino music in the movie. With Hill Harper one second he is playing classical then the next second he changes to jazz by the time you get to the other part of the apartment. Then we have rap music. It is like everybody they knew had their favorite song and it got on the soundtrack. Who wrote this movie.
