Politically Correct Conan

Another prime example of the political correctness of cartoons and what jokes they have become. Conan the Aventurer? Seeing that title pisses me off. He was always Conan the Barbarian not some watered down kids version in the mold of Tarzan. I never wanted to see this and if anyone wants to make a cartoon based on Conan it should be Bakshi and have it made for adults.

This show aired over a decade ago, what do you expect? And as a cartoon it was quite good. It didn't have lots of gore but had more violence then alot of kids shows made at the time.

reply

Over a decade ago it was lousy and still is. I expect it to be called Conan the Barbarian like it should be.

reply

Uhm.. yeah cause you know all the movies carried that name also... wait no they didn't.

You can't call every Conan "The Barbarian" it gets confusing, bad enough that "The Adventurer" seems to be the name of the '92 cartoon and some horrible live action series.

The show was awesome for its time and under watched by alot of people, one of the few cartoon shows that carried a real story thread through from beginning to end and wasn't from Japan.

reply

Each of the books had a different title for him 'Conan the Magnificent', 'Conan the Buccaneer' etc so adventurer is fine for this really

this was a GREAT cartoon and I wish had all the episodes even now!

Still I'm getting 27 soon so thats about half the way there!

Actually they're not the real books. They're the complete compilations of the R.E. Howard short stories and novella... but you're quite right, none of the stories was "Conan the Anything". They had titles like Red Nails, The Frost Giant's Daughter and the Hour of the Dragon.

Well, in the series he is referred to as Conan of Cimmeria, which is is what he called himself in many of the stories. Conan the Adventurer was just the title. But I guess that's what you meant.

But back I topic, the OP is either insane, or extremely unreasonable. Although what I really suspect is that he googled Conan, found out that there was an animated Conan series, read the title, and started making judgments without actually watching anything. I am 23 now and I watched this series when I was 9. It instilled my interest in R.E. Howard's Hyborian Age and became a lifelong Conan fan. A couple months ago I downloaded the entire series for nostalgia's sake and couldn't believe how quality the series was, even watching it through the eyes of a 23-year-old. The episodes were very well written and animated and contained some well executed drama. It was extremely violent for a kid's cartoon, and I couldn't believe what the creators got away with. There were monster decapitations, on-screen deaths (although rare), hostage taking, and a bunch of other random acts of violence. This series could NEVER have been made today in a post-Columbine US.

Overall, it was very true to R.E. Howard's universe. Watching it today after reading the stories, it was fun to see many of the locales and creatures of the Hyborian Age come to life. The biggest deviation was the fact that Conan was a principled character, unlike in the stories. However, he was portrayed as impulsive and often solved his problems with violence - very Conan-like attributes and surprising to see in the protagonist of a kid's cartoon. Overall, if R.E. Howard could see this, I'm sure he'd be pleased that a whole new generation of young people were introduced to his creation.

well, from what little i've seen of the show the main bad guy looks an awful lot like Serpentor. it's a little strange seeing conan slay foes by "zapping" them somewhere with his sword rather than slicing their gullets, but this was not marketed to adults so there you go.

an adult conan cartoon would be great I think. korgoth was an eye opener and hilarious, too bad there was only one of those.

It was a time were they talked about violence in tv, so to make this for kids it should be made like this.
If it was targeted for kids it had to be pollitically correct, and even so, they said that this cartoon was violent.
If it was today... yeah rigth... screww the censors.

Actually Conan was Conan the Cimmerian--as per Robert E Howard. Conan the Barbarian is as dumbed down as one can imagine Conan to be.

reply

Indeed. One shouldn't confuse the works of Howard with the film 'Conan The Barbarian'.

Conan the Cimmerion would have been a much better title than Conan the Adventurer. It sounds similar to the more famous title and it doesn't seem quite so sanitized.

I remember Conan mainly from the comic books, which were very graphic in violence and eroticism.

the series felt toned down a lot. The design was not of the best either, especially the women.

Still when compared to what was on TV in the early 90s, this was one of the best. And Needle was my favourite character

Preffered this over Dragon Ball

The 2011 reboot film makes this look like the original 1982 film by comparison.

Pleased to meet you. Hope you guess my name. ;)

Without any hope of reply, 16 years ago, I think a Ralph Bakshi Conan movie (or series?) would be smashing!
