Do Christians have an issue with this movie?

I am just curious, I am a Christian and I personally don't. Morgan Freeman's character administers occasional tough love in this movie by showing people the error of their ways, encourages repentance, has a demeanor of gentle wisdom and humor throughout for the most part, and comes through in the end for his people when he has to. His behavior and demeanor was generally consistent with God other than appearing in literal human form and allowing himself to be seen literally other than Jesus' time, and of course granting excessive power to any human. But I understand the point of the story was to show that running the universe is a complex task and that humans shouldn't complain to much. Just curious how other Christians felt about it.

I was raised a Roman Catholic but not practicing. That being said I don't get offended because I consider religion a personal choice.

That being said I thought it was a decent light comedy that taught what is really important in life. If you look at the movie thru the eyes of god interacting with our society it works.

I wouldn't be surprised if the juxtaposition of religious themes with sexuality and language offended some Christians.

I remember when it first came out is sounded like it was going to be pretty insulting, especially the previews with Carey being God standing atop the building saying "My will be done".

Once I saw it I thought it portrayed God in a very respectful way, having him basically show "mankind" how little we really know and how wise God actually is.

Bruce was humbled by his encounter with God.

I could have done without the cursing and the sexual innuendos but for the most part I really liked it . It is nice that Hollywood actually admits that God exists.

reply

It's not exactly admitting God exists to make a movie about him. Hollywood doesn't just make documentaries after all.

reply

Hollywood isn't religious.

reply

It's Jewish.

We're a Christian family. Dad and I like it, but mom is some-what against it.

What the hell doesn't (some) Christians have some sort of issue with, anyway?

Seen it a couple times and currently watching it. Born again Christian, never left the faith. I love it! Not canon or even based on scripture, but seems fun and not outside of the realm of possibility.
Sometimes people just need to learn a lesson.
Bruce needed to learn something.
Israelites need to learn a lesson.
Muslims need to learn a lesson.
I need to learn... etc.

How can one be a born again christian if they never left the faith? Wouldn't that just be a christian?

It just means you've been saved and repented before God, admitted you're a sinner and you confess your faith in God, in Jesus and put your faith in them for your salvation.

Here is where Jesus commanded anyone who wanted to obtain eternal life with God to be born again:

John 3:1-14 King James Version (KJV)

3 There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:

2 The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.

3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?

5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water (physically born) and of the Spirit (born again aka getting saved), he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.

8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.

9 Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?

10 Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?

11 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.

12 If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?

13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.

When I first saw the previews I was kind of put off by it because I thought it was going to be insulting, but looking it up and seeing it is more of a moral tale I gave it a shot.

Just re-watched this movie with my sister and a friend. I'm christian orthodox and I wasn't offended at all by this movie.
