Why was the perpetrator crying in the end?

Did he feel bad about committing a terrible deed, was he in the end worried that he will be caught and punished or did he feel hurt and humiliated in the process himself as well, sort of like the fat bloke from "Funny Games" (1997) was crying whilst torturing a family and nearly or even totally being responsible for their murders.

What do you think?

Or maybe it was meant to be symbolic?
