How does a Cylon sneak up on anybody?

It's funny that everytime we see the big metal Cylons walking around they clank and whir and thud thud thud yet when Helo was searching for Boomer one of them sneaked up behind him (in an underground structure no less where the echo would make all that mechanical noise even more pronounced)

Not a direct answer to that scene, but related:

I'm watching this for the first time, and got a sinking feeling in the very first scene, when the first thing the human delegate (who's there, after all, specifically to watch for and meet the Cylon delegation) knew of the Cylon arrival for the first time in 20 years was when they walked into the room in which he was sitting.

I realised then that this is the kind of show where practical logic is made secondary to dramatic effect. Even just in the pilot mini-series I've seen several examples of this.

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

I don't follow. What's the issue?

Let's be bad guys.

His mission, probably the same mission for years, was to go to that room on a certain day (or maybe every day, it isn't clear) and wait for a Cylon representative to show up. Humans had had no contact with the Cylons since the peace treaty, but they did agree to meet at that station on a regular basis. But they never made contact. So, his job was to sit there and wait for them to walk in. He wasn't set up to detect an approaching ship, but it would make more sense to sit in a ship and use your sensors, then go to the station when and if they showed up. It WAS done for dramatic effect, the sitting in a room. But it was not illogical.

People miss things all the time when they're focused on one task. It's human nature. We all like to think we're aware of anything and everything, but we're not. Our brains filter out sensory information all the time.

Let's be bad guys.
