Exactly what was Dan Dark hospitalized for?

Ok, I don't think they said what he was infected with during the film, but if they did, I didn't catch it... So any idea what he had?

Psoriatic arthropathy

Interesting.

And was there any meaning to it, or was it just a tool (plot wise) to get him into the hospital?

Well it was the same disease that Dennis Potter (the screenwriter) suffered from. Take that for what it's worth; whether there was any deep symbolic significance or whether he just chose to write about something he knew all too well is the question. In the original miniseries (haven't seen the movie yet) there's a comment by the psychiatrist about how people with skin diseases often think their internal failings are manifesting themselves externally, so there's a slight bit of symbolism there, but I think the main thing was that Potter wanted to put his protagonist in the same situation he had endured himself.

It's a form of psoriasis that is very painful & crippling, as McGonigle stated.

It's actually a hereditary disease, which causes an enzyme to malfunction and eventually increase the growth of cells, especially in tissue that has a high rate of division such as the skin. The form 'Dan Dark' suffers from is the most severe there is, and he seems to be going through a very extreme phase in the story.

Psoriatic arthropathy is in the family of psoriatic diseases, the most commonly known type is called psoriasis. Some people with psoriasis only have one patch their entire lives, while others may develop a life-threatening version of a psoriatic disease. There's really no cure for psoriatic diseases, but there are ways of controlling it that work for some people.

I hope this doesn't sound too gloomy. Most people with psoriatic disease live normal lives with only occasional flareups and do not suffer as much as portrayed in this movie.

also Outbreaks tend to be brought on by Stress... (either real or Imagined) which is why his psycho-therapy with Gibson's character was so effective

The term used is psoriatic arthritis. I've had plaque psoriasis since 1988, it started on my scalp and then during the years it moved to the rest of my body. I eventually was diagnosed with severe psoriasis and now suffer from psoratic arthritis. I have been wanting to watch this movie since it came out but I can't find it anywhere. I might try Netflix. I think I would like to see this movie (even if it looks like an independant film) just to see someone else like me "so-to-speak".

Psoriatic Arthritis, it affects both the skin and joints, is extremely painful. I've never seen a case that bad though?
