Why did Matti leave his friends before the gig?

Could someone clarify one thing to me? Why did Matti leave his friends just before the gig so they had to play without him singing and playing the rhytm guitar?
I thought I heard him say something like 'hon funderar på att dö', referring to the girl played by Annika Marklund but it didn't quite make sense to me still. Interesting though that the 'communist girl' as she is called in the cast by this is given a somewhat larger role than in the book where she disappears altoghether after the scene in the dressing room.

Jag tyckte mig höra honom säga nåt i stil med 'hon funderar på att dö' syftande på kommunisttjejen som Annika Marklund spelar men det verkade ändå lite långsökt. Intressant dock att den tjejen får lite mer plats i storyn än i boken där hon ju försvinner helt efter händelsen i omklädningsrummet vid husmodersgymnastiken.

Uhm, what he actually said was that his grandfather was dying, which wasn't true of course, as all he really wanted to was to be with the communist girl (and just do it with her, I guess). So, that's why. :)

Quite, and it came to demonstrate that he wasn't really in it for the music but for the ladies as became more and more obvious during the story.

.. or just for THE lady. We don't know if it was true love and he just chose love over music.

Like some of the other suggest, he was probably just a horny guy, he got to do it with the girl before and he didn't think he's see her again. Now she she shows up he doesn't want to miss out on the opportunity, so he left his friends and went with her.

I suppose they brought the character of "the communist girl" into the film more because they didn't really have that what_happened_to_them_all_afterwards - section in the film and they had to show how serious Niila was about music, compared to Matti.
