What was on your mind Colin?

I can't believe such a talented actor as Colin Firth actually did this movie. Was he bored with doing good films and decided to try his hand at a terribly bad script. I bought this and wished that I hadn't. It just seems like a bunch of nonsense. Dumb characters and silly script = STINKER.

reply

Boy, you said it! I also bought the video, thinking it had to be pretty decent, but I was wrong. So $19.99 down the tubes !! Really bad script and what was all that about with Heather Graham jumping around naked? Yeeesh. Just silly.

reply

Saw this movie on TV the other day and totally hated it.

Am glad that I didn't spend any $$$ on renting it!

I love Colin, but hated this film!

reply

WELL, THIS IS TURLY A BAD MOVIE. i AM GLAD THAT i WATCHED IT
ON HBO RECENTLY.

Hi...i couldn't agree with you all more. I just "discovered" Colin Firth. He played Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones's Diary very well. So thought i'd pick up his other movies to watch. Hope Springs is utterly horrible. There is no chemistry what-so-ever between the leads. The romance is shallow - what do each of them see in each other? You don't warm up to the characters or ...even like them. The movie is just so disappointing. And yeah, i paid good money for the VCD. ;-) Sigh.

If you like period pieces, and can handle 5 hrs of one, rent Pride and Prejudice w/Colin. It's amazing! The author of Bridget Jones created the character of Mark Darcy from Colin's role as Mr. Darcy in P & P. It's a MUST SEE for Colin Firth fans.

reply

I agree about Pride & Prejudice. It's long, but those five hours go by very fast - faster than this short, crappy film which feels more like five hours. Anyway, you can just watch one episode at a time. If you're watching because of Colin Firth, you won't want to miss P&P. It's the 1995 BBC mini-series version.

I actually BOUGHT the VCD, I'm so glad I didn't waste my money on the DVD.

However I didn't find it as awful as you guys do, though i admit most of the time I wasn't really following the plot; just sort of gooey-ly staring at Colin Firth. It isn't too bad a movie, but it definitely is not a good one.

Anyway, CF was gorgeous there, he had a lovely body. Am I a little perverted? yes I am!

You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you

i'm so glad i didn't buy this! i borrowed it instead

what was he thinking?! it's an awful movie but then again i didn't really watch the movie...just watched him and how gorgeous he was throughout..he was so good in his other movies as mark darcy and Mr Darcy...

i must say he does indeed have a lovely body - although he looked VERY silly with that scarf!

he's definitely much improved from pride and prejudice (in that bathtub scene)

I knew exactly what he was thinking when I read the book ("New Cardiff"). The wit and understated whimsy of Charles Webb brought me back to it again and again. And Colin was perfect for the Colin in the book.

I have noticed that the book, too, has a split audience -- I suppose either you "get it" or you don't.

I was eagerly waiting to see the movie, but when I did, I was bitterly disappointed. The lightness and magic was gone. I suppose I must blame Mark Herman for that. The pacing was clumsy, but I found many of the characters portrayed in a heavy-handed way, too. So I don't blame anyone for not liking the movie.

But I still pine for how I envisioned it through the original written word.

yeah, i've often said that Colin does such respectable films, this one.. hmm, i dont know. Maybe he was bored and had no other rolls at the time.

>Heather<
- what are you going to do, bleed on me?
- you sons of a silly person

reply

I got it free from the library and it wasn't worth it! lol. What was poor Colin thinking?

Whilst it isn't one of Colin's best films, I didn't think it was that bad, I liked it, believe me i've seen a lot worse. And even Colin said in an interview that it didn't turn out as they hoped. I don't hold anything against Colin for doing this film, at the end of the day he decided to give it a go and do the best he could with a weak script, whilst that wasn't up to scratch his acting certainly was.

If you want something done properly, kill Baldrick before you start.

reply

The movie wasn't that bad to watch because of Graham and Driver. I like their acting.

This movie had LOTS of funny scenes. Yes, the movie didn't turn out as originally scripted and planned, but the story was OK. If one is a Colin fan and wants to see him looking really handsome, then they'll be rewarded with his performance. His crying scene was heartfelt. His facial expressions, especially when he's in the church with Heather, were fun to watch. I liked it enough to buy it this week...

reply

Oh he look so vulnerable when he's crying. And he look so good in that blue shirt.

I just watched this on DVD last weekend and was disappointed with it. None of the relationships seemed believable and the scene where Heather jumps around naked came off being very forced, she didn't even seem drunk which I'm sure she was meant to be. That whole scene screamed of desperation and made no sense.

I think the movie could've benefited greater if they added more humour and played up more on the differences between English and American culture.

reply

yes i agree those early heather scenes were a bad...and i was not looking forward to the rest of the movie at that point. but then i got into it and thought it was a nice bit of fluff and not that painful after all.

maybe i just liked it because it didnt rehash a romantic comedy formula that i'm getting soooooo sick of - made famous and done beautifully in Pride and Predjudice - but now so many romantic plot lines in movies depend on the female hating the male first but her disdane causes him to change for the better and she realises she loves him....it was a nice idea but so many movies use it now that i hate it
-batman begins (that is essentially all Kate's role consists of)(i think she plays pretty much the same character in 'thankyou for smoking' too)
-just like heaven
-most meg ryan movies (when harry met sally - she hates him b4 they become friends)
-runaway bride
-bridget jones diary
-Ever After (which i love but do tire of the tough-intelligent-perfect-female goddess-role that Drew plays)

and the list goes on....

so i like it when i see a movie where they dont hate each other first and then grow to love each other.

Plus i love drawing portraits and so that was the other reason i stayed awake :-)
