Is this film not based on the Lawrence Thornton novel with the same name and subject? Why no credit?

shareI haven't yet seen the movie - and am hesitant to do so - but was hugely moved by the Lawrence Thornton novel when it was published in 1987. I was skeptical of the "magical realism" approach at first but found it extremely well-writen and powerful. Remember that the Argentinian dictatorship only loosened in the early '80s and the stories of that era were just starting to get told internationally.
