Despite the viewer having to suspend disbelief, I found this film quite moving and powerful.. somewhat of a surprise. Some of the performances, such as the always wonderful Emma Thompson, were outstanding and worth watching the film for that alone. It's good to remember what villains have had power in different countries... they usually disappear when justice prevails but we have to keep thinking of what could be. I watched this a few days after the July bombings in London near where I live. It's sad what man does to man.. or woman. Does human nature ever really change?

i totally agree, it really did move me(this film), i didn't know what to expect of this film when i first rented it but it really was a lovely, touching film.

I love captain jack Sparrow, because he's hot all by his onesie, savvy?

I thought the film was miscast. Antonio Banderas was great but Emma Thompson was appalling. Why didn't they get a decent Spanish or South American actress to play the role instead of an Englishwoman pretending that she can't speak English that well so puts on a dodgy Spanish accent. I think that could have been a really powerful character if it was played by the right person.

reply

I really liked the movie but I agree that, as much as I like her, Emma Thompson was miscast. There are a number of Spanish speaking actresses who could have done the role justice if for no other reason than to add some authenticity. Or Meryl Streep who can do any language accent. Christopher Hampton has also directed Carrington starring Emma Thompson so maybe that's the connection.

Captain Algren: I will tell you...how he lived.

They forgot to tell the other side of the story. Most of the "poor victims" were trying to impose a cuban-type of government using terrorism.

this movie has definitely sparked my interest in argentinian history.
i thought it was very sad and definitely caused me to rethink what i consider important in my life and remember that there are so many people in the world who's concerns are so urgent and desperate today. my friend and i watched it at like 3 in the morning and felt so frivolous afterward. to me, these are the types of movies that american kids should have to see (atleast to be used as a discussion point) because so many are just clueless.
don't know how many americans are on this board, but who learned about anything remotely like this...ever? it makes me sad because our lack of knowledges creates a lots of ignorant and selfish people her.
anyway, didn't realize i was gonna say so much.
p.s. emma thompson was great. i had to get used to her being Argentinian but after i looked past that i just got wrapped up in the story

If you want more background on Argentina's Dirty War, you can start by reading "Nunca Mas" ("Never Again") - it's the official report by the National Commission on the Disappearance of Persons.

There is also an amazing film that's hard to find, called "Night of the Pencils". It's based on the true story of a group of high school students in Buenos Aires who were arrested and imprisoned for organizing a protest. Only one survived to tell what happened, and this film is based on his experience. Devastating, but so important not to forget.

You're a *beep* liar, and I hope you burn in hell for your lack of humanity, decency, and your revisionist views.

The movie was good.. I really wanted Antonio Banderas character to kick someone’s ass in the movie.... I’m so use to seeing Antonio Banderas playing the bad ass and in this movie he didn’t have to resort to violence.. I wish he would of kicked the traitors butt. Remember the one that was pretending to have a loved one missing in the meeting... I think we can all learn a lesson from this movie … I hated what happened to those poor women…

I felt the movie was very well made. I'm not all that familiar with Argentina's history, so I don't know how accurate the movie is. I was able to watch it with a totally open mind. It was disturbing, beautiful, and extremely tragic. Of course, it didn't hurt that I could watch Banderas for a couple of hours either. :)

surprisingly good, someone said depressing, yeah indeed, after watching that young girl being abused, raped and killed, who wouldn't, but the subject was interesting and most of all, it was real life. Great movie, i enjoyed it very much.

I thought it was a powerful film with images that won't be forgotten. People who have suffered in this way should be remembered.
