I see in the character of Akane a person whose narrative arch embodies the concept of redemption.
With an economy of words and exposition, scenes and dialogue, Director Masaaki Tezuka, through Yumiko Shaku, takes us along a journey which includes acceptance by her team and includes the daring and death-defying rescue of her chief antagonist and tormentor, 2nd Lt. Hayama, played very menacingly by Yusuke Tomoi.
I am able to relate Akane Yashiro to the film Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla in a way that enhances my enjoyment of this remarkable kaiju eiga. She is central to the story, and her heroism is plausible and satisfying. Akane anchors the narrative of this film, which is underpinned by her relationship with Kiryu.
