Finney was Churchill

I throughly enjoyed this movie very much. Not many do though. This is a very (non-hollywood) type of film, And I guess that's why. But I have never seen a more vivid look at the past then Albert Finney's portrayal of Winston Churchill. Looked like him, sounded like him, Even got Churchill's distinct speech pattern down to a T. And the chemestry between him and Clemmie (Venessa Redgrave) Is simply perfect. Though I find the film focuses a little too much on the relationship between Winston and Clemmie, It does show us a more personal side to a very controversial historical figure. Winston Churchill was known as a very intelligent, and verbally crafty man, and the difficulties he had to get England off it's dream and back into reality. But also tactless, difficult, and even at times crude. The example of which he's takeing off his pants and Mrs.P (his assistant) has to remind him that she is there in order for him to put his pants back on and begs her pardon.

But this very human side along with incredible acting from all actors takes us away from the statitstics and into a window of real people, who celebrated and suffered in their lives. Unfortunately this movie was placed before the war and ends at the very beginning of WWII.But in the director's commentary there is hope that future Churchill films will be made and focusing on Churchill's tenure as a leader in Great Britan dureing WWII

I totally agree -- Finney nailed the role of Sir Winston.

As good a portrayal of a (relatively) recent historical figure as I've ever seen.

You're truley mad! Vanessa was wonderful in this, hence the Golden Globe and Emmy nomination, but I will tell you that it wasn't the best she's done. Not too much material but what she had she did wonders with. "Sort of one-note" reminds me of the Lion in Winter when Eleanor says, "You bore me. La-la-la forever on one-note." I've never seen a one note performance from Redgrave. She has vloumes to her acting and that's what makes her a star. But yes, Finney was Churchill and got a well deserved Emmy, now if they can only GIVE him an Oscar as they seem to be doing now?

I totally Agree, this would have made a great mini-series convering the war and his second govenment.

"I'm in favor of taking dangerous weapons out of the hands of idiots, lets start with computers."

they should make a film with both finney and ganz in it... hehehe... u know, churchill one on one with hitler... both done by superb actors.

I must disagree. I think Robert Hardy did a much better job in the Wilderness Years.

And Vanessa Redgrave as Clementine? No Way! Sian Phillips, again in the Wilderness Years, was the quintessential Clementine.

The relationship between the Churchills in this production was syrupy and labourious. I found certain scenes to be uncomfortable to watch for the sheer woodenness of the performance.

As others have said, there was too much focus on the relationship between Churchill and his wife and not enough on the relationship Churchill had with his government, his nation, indeed the world.

Mary, Churchill's daughter, attended a screening and was heard at one point to say, "that's my papa!"

The only problem I had with his performance is that he played it too old. While watching, I would have thought that I was watching a very old Churchill, in his eighties. In reality, Churchill was only about 65 when the war started.
