Contestant that was injured (Darin)

Recall seeing a news story about this guy who lost concience after a stunt on this show. They spoke with his girlfriend who commented about the waiver players have to sign that states the show takes no responsibility for injuries. She went on to discuss how they could have at least helped out with his medical bills but didn't. Tried to look it up online and this is what I found -

Edited due to GSN reshowing episodes and just watched it. Brook stated after he was injured that he choose not to finish game. Which of course was a cover up just to allow the other players to finish. He was being rushed to hospital.

Does anyone else recall this?

Poop in his hand ... Poop in his hand

As I recall, this led to a lot of bad publicity for the show and contributed to its cancellation. The contestant was a personal trainer who was involved in a stunt that required him to hold his breath underwater, but he was submerged far too long resulting in permanent brain damage. I remember seeing an interview on Entertainment Tonight about a year after the incident where the contestant and his girlfriend were talking about how they were coping with the aftermath. Apparently, he had issues with memory loss, headaches, motor reflexes, speech, as well as diminished intelligence. I think it's in poor taste that Dog Eat Dog still continues to show that episode as part of the syndication deal knowing how it damaged a person's life.

That episode was just on and it was totally his fault. All he had to do was pull his ripcord when he felt he couldn't hold his breath anymore. He decided to stay down longer than he should have, it's on him. Now, if he could prove that he tried pulling his cord and it didn't pull him up, that would be one thing, but that isn't what happened.

It was the contestant's fault but it's still in poor taste that the episode airs as part of the syndication package with the only mention of Darin being from Brooke when she states "Darin chose not to continue." Uh, he's got brain damage!

reply

Well, that's what happened in the original airing. It's not like they put that in there for the syndication package. Also and this is just a guess, if his lawsuit had worked, the episode probably wouldn't be part of the syndication deal.

reply

Like I wrote, it's in poor taste, nothing more. Imagine being Darin's family & friends, or even Darin, and seeing that episode in constant reruns.

reply

Honestly do you think they are watching the show?

I understand what you are saying, but if you think about it, there's things on TV all the time that are going to bother someone. Like if an athlete got seriously injured in a game it would be shown again & again, depending on who it is, even years later. And just everyday people who have bad things happen to them.

With that being said, if it was my choice, I would take it out of syndication. The show doesn't carry over from episode to episode so it wouldn't matter if they skipped one. I'm willing to bet it's just something that no one thought about.

They still released The Twilight Zone movie. One of the leads died during filming due to an accident. Yet it got released, is on dvd, and still gets aired.
They should take the episode out of reruns, but they probably didn't think of it like someone said.

reply

I don't think they should take it out of reruns, the injury happened ages ago so it makes no sense to pull the episode now, it's a little too late for that.

reply

That episode is on now. Poor guy.

YOU'RE MAKING ME CRAZY!!!!!

reply

The injury wasn't why the show was cancelled, it was going to be cancelled anyways due to pulling in low ratings, the injury was just a convenient excuse for the network.
