Of course, Dobel didn't exist...

He was Jerry's hidden "assertive" side. Always there when he needed to be brave or tough. The red car is a classic Freudian construct, possibly representing Jerry's penis or maybe even his mother's womb. Dobel wreaks havoc in Jerry's comfortable, non-confronational life, forcing him to make the tough decisions that change his life.

(I'm busking, of course, but it's a neat theory, no?)

Awight we're The Daamned we're a punk baand and this is called Carn't Be Appy T'day!

Amanda and her mother both talked to him, you idiot, of course he existed.

"Amanda and her mother" weren't real people. They were characters in a movie, played by actors. You idiot.

Before you started to cover your keyboard in spittle, you should have read my post properly. I wasn't being entirely serious.

Yes, I know they were characters in a movie, as was Dobel. But you implied Jerry existed (within the context of the movie) but that Dobel did not.

As for you not being "entirely serious", where exactly did you indicate that in your post?

reply

PurpleRose's comment that Dobel didn't exist was an interesting idea; he could've been Falk's alter ego, having discussions with the people in his life. Worthy of a fun discussion. It was your 'idiot' comment that brought everything down.

I think your theory is legitimate. I read in the trivia about this movie that Woody Allen based Dobel on a man who mentored him when he was a young comedy writer. Apparently, he gave him advice and helped him out and then was institutionalized. I can see how Dobel was probably molded after him.

reply

Would have been amusing had they hired Peter Falk to play the protagonist`s alter ego.

in movies wheres someone is sick and has another personality ....... there are scenes where people also talk to that person so you think they are real. In fight club people talked to both brad pitt and edward norton all the time. because when you have multiple personality disorder it's still the same people talking to you...to both of you.... so it make sense. its not too much of a stretch as a theory.

reply

I actually think it's an acute observation, whether Allen intended it or not. It feels psychologically right.

Just forget you ever saw it. It's better that way.

Thank you, voided-1 :)

this theory may fit in as dobel decided not to go to LA . This was when Jerry was assertive and strong enough to make it on his own without Debol

reply

i think thats a good theory. Dobel honestly acted like an older version of Falk. The same stammering and personality exactly. I always thought "I wish biggs wasnt acting EXACTLY like allen" but maybe theres a reason for that.........

No matter what film, there will always be hacks claiming that a certain character was just a figment of another's imagination. Should be called the "Fight Club Law"
