At the end of the film mum is saying "i cannae tell you" as to why she has to be with stan - and Stan says the same thing - "you wouldnt understand".
Is it just a case that they are "in love" (of some sort or another), or was there a more sinister reason why mum had to be with stan?
Yeah I've been wondering this myself...I think it's because she was hooked on drugs the whole time, and just didn't wanna tell Liam.
shareI think it was a mixture of fear and dependence. Dependence on drugs, but also love. Abused spouses often have very complicated relationships with their abusive other-halves - something a 16 year old probably never would understand. At this point it seems that Loach is suggesting that there is something very masochistic about Liam's mum, perhaps he's even making a broader statement.

Drugs. It is totally about drugs. People who aren't drug addicts don't understand how all consuming it is.
