There are two:
a French release with an English soundtrack and French subtitles which can't be turned off
a German release with an English soundtrack and optional German subtitles

reply

I've heard the French dvd has great quality but it lasts 85 minutes. They've cut some scenes.

On the other hand, there is a German dvd that lasts 116 minutes but unfortunately, I have no information about the quality.
Has somebody any reference about this German dvd? Thanks in advance.

reply

The French DVD is NOT cut. It has a wrong cover description. I own this DVD.

reply

Thanks a lot for your answer.

I had some doubts because in Marc Warren Online (it's a forum) somebody wrote about the French dvd and said that some scenes had been cut.

reply

Who sells the French version if better quality ; is it available in UK?

reply

I don't know if the French dvd has better quality. I've read several praises about it. It was released in 2008. It's available on Amazon France. The distributor is Optimale. According to IMDB it's an authorized distributor in France.

The German dvd had excellent reviews from Amazon's customers too. It was released in January 2011. It is available on Amazon Germany. The distributor is Pro Fun Media which is an authorized distributor according IMDB.

I guess that Amazon (France or Germany) dispatches to England.

(to check out the distributors).

I've found the trailer of the German dvd on YouTube. The quality seems to be fantastic. Here you are.

Some other people in Marc Warren Online have praised the French dvd too.

reply

Thanks a lot with this info.
Have found the dvd today and newly ordered a copy - £16.83, about 19euros.
Think it might be the German version, thus German subtitles? Can they be hidden do you know? Subtitles can be distracting, unless I watch a French or German film in which case a necessity as my French is only ok and my German minimal.
Am still amazed this was never released to dvd in UK - great acting throughout and it stayed true to the book, largely.

reply

You're welcome.

As far as I know, the German dvd has English soundtrack and German subtitles (but you can turn it off).

The French dvd has English soundtrack and French subtitles. You can't turn it off.

I've ordered the German dvd on Amazon Germany recently. That's why I couldn't give you extra info. I don't have my dvd yet.

I agree with you. It's hard to believe that this movie wasn't released on dvd in the UK. And if you check out, it was released by Optimale and Pro Fun Media. Both are distributors of "gay interest movies", so to speak. I have nothing against "gay movies" but I think "No Night Is Too Long" is more than a "gay film". Great performances, intriguing screenplay.
I hope we have luck with our dvd's. I was born in Italy but I'm living in Argentina now. You can't imagine how difficult is getting this kind of European movies in this country.

reply

Grateful your info. again. I hope to get the dvd in the next 5/6 days ; on the payment section of the online form it said debits could only be used if the customer has a German Bank a/c. I don't but used a credit card. Thus my guess my dvd will have German subtitles - pleased these can be turned off. (I live in UK).
I agree although the story is centred around a gay relationship, heterosexuals can of course well relate to it.
Marc Warren and Lee Williams made a thoroughly convincing on-screen gay couple I felt (I'm gay) and not at all the case when straight actors are chosen for gay roles on film. Whoever chose them, chose perfectly. Not sure Marc was all that convincing as an academic but he was convincing as the gay active partner, and as it turned out, the one (for me) I empathised with most strongly. The sadness of the movie is that Tim realised too late how much he had been loved and how much he loved Ivo, in return. Both lost - heart-breaking.
We don't see Lee often on British tv at all but Marc seems to get a lot of work, deserved of course. He is currently on stage in London, btw.
In almost every comment I read on this movie EVERYONE asks why this film has never been released globally on dvd/blu-ray ; superb acting and an excellent script. It would make money that's for sure. I think of some of the rubbish on dvd's now, it makes it harder to figure out why this is left to rot in a store room of the BBC unseen by hundreds of thousands who would appreciate the art of it on-screen. Agreed I trust?

reply

You are lucky. You'll have your dvd in a few days. I will have to wait 3 weeks more or less. But the film is worth it, of course.

Your interpretation about the movie and the feelings of the characters (specially Tim) are really interesting. In fact, one of the most interesting things about this movie is that everybody who has watched it seem to have their own and different explanation (I've seen topics like "Did Tim love Ivo?", for example). Your point of view about the story is very close to mine.

After "No Night Is Too Long", I became a fan of Marc and Lee. They shared an incredible chemistry on the screen.
Unfortunately, I couldn't see much of Lee's work. I'm surprised of reading that he is not working (on TV) very often. What a waste of talent! (and beauty -I'm not made of wood-).

Marc Warren (another gorgeous face, by the way) seem to have a long career, specially in TV. Fortunately, I could watch some of his work. I did know he will be on stage until January starring "Cool Hand Luke". Will you see the play?
Greetings from Argentina.

reply

I hope to have the dvd this time next week. I'll let you know the quality.

No plans to watch "Cool Hand Luke" but it's had quite good reviews. I agree, Lee not having had much work in past few years is a huge waste of talent.

As you enjoyed this movie, I'd like to suggest you have a look at the French film (subtitled) Presque Rien, also released as Come Undone. A thought-provoking story and fantastic acting. Doubtful you will find it in Argentina but worth a wait, as it is so good.

Btw, I have bought my dvd from a company based in switzerland called Grooves Inc. Maybe for the future they can get a dvd to you quicker than 3 weeks? (Hope the quality is perfect!)
Incidentally, I wrote Lee W.'s agents in London for his autograph about 2-3 weeks ago. No idea if they will have sent it on to him or not, but if (big if) he replies will let you know. I told him his performance in NNITL was exceptional and it was.

How do you think Brokeback Mountain compared with this film?

reply

Yes, please. Let me know about the dvd quality.

Thanks a lot for your recommendation about "Presque Rien". Surely it will be hard to find here but even so, I will try.
In return of your kindness, I'll leave you my own recommendation. It's an Italian movie called "Le fate ignorante" (or "His secret life", in English market). It's an awesome movie with the great Italian actor Stefano Accorsi and directed by the Turkish director Ferzan Ozpetec (an activist for gay rights and a militant against Turkish political system). Here you are the link on IMDB.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0274497/

I bought my dvd of "No Night Is Too Long" on Amazon Germany. So, I guess my dvd is from Pro Fun Media which is an authorized distributor in Germany, Austria and
Switzerland. If the quality is like I watched in the trailer posted on YouTube, I'll be pleased.

Please let me know if you receive an autograph of Lee. I'd love to have one.

I liked "Brokeback Mountain" but I think "No Night Is Too Long" is much better. The script includes some mistery. In fact, it's a thriller. And the performance of the couple Williams/Warren was better and more convincing than the acting of Gyllenhaal/Ledger. The characters is "NNITL" were darker and complex. And the topics of both movies were extremely different. "Brokeback Mountain" was mainly centered in topics like intolerance and the need to live your life and feelings secretly, specially if you are gay in a "non gay friendly enviroment". As regard to acting, Gyllenhaal wasn't big deal, in my opinion. Ledger was better showing how the intolerance of those times seemed to be under the skin of the characters (Ledger never said "I love you" to Gyllenhaal's character).

In "NNITL", being gay wasn't the main topic. The movie could have shown a story about a hetero couple and the results would have been the same. Because the topics of this movie are universal matters. Love, deceit, disappointment, cruelty, insecurity and certain confusion about sexuality (specially for Tim). The performances of Williams and Warren were much better (mainly Warren's performance). He built a complex character with lots of nuances: tenderness, certain moments of arrogance, insecurity and even violence. I loved the subtle gestures of Marc Warren. For example: when Ivo confessed his love for Tim, pay attention and you will see that before saying "I love you", Ivo moves his lips pronouncing this phrase without any sound. He did it three times before saying the "fatal" phrase.
In another scene, when they are talking after having sex in the cruise, Ivo proposed to spend more time together when the cruise finishes. In certain moment, he said "Tim" and later he caressed Tim's hair. After doing it, if you look at the Ivo's lips, you'll notice that he moved his mouth saying "I love you" in completely silence. He knew these demonstrations of affection were pointless with Tim. But even so, he needed to say it. So, he did it in silence, only moving his lips. That kind of tiny details make a great performance (maybe it wasn't Warren's idea, maybe the director wanted him to do that).

As you can see, the construction of the characters is more interesting and complex than in "Brokeback Mountain", in my opinion.

"Brokeback Mountain" is a gay movie because it's about the troubles and pain that two people had to face due to their sexual orientation.

"NNITL" is not what I'd call a "gay movie" because what happened to Tim, Ivo or Isabel could happend to any of us no matter if we are hetero, homo or bi.

Note: I'm not an English native speaker and I know my English is not perfect. Please excuse me if you find my messages hard to understand or they have some mistakes.

reply

Thanks this long and interesting post - your English is very good andno problems whatsoever in understanding it! I can't speak Italian and my French is rusty!

Agree in general your summary of BBM - Jake was not outstanding, only good.

NNITL is a little gem - Lee & Marc were entirely believable as a gay couple, methinks due to both of them working hard, hard, hard at their roles, and agree again, especially Marc. My own feelings are Marc added these little extra touches himself without direction, hallmarks of a really good actor and a dedicated one. I pray the quality of the dvd is good - will be very disappointed if not.

I will root out Lee's agent's address in London ; do write him and he may reply to you too. Yes, if he replies, will let you know as I enclosed a photo of his to sign. I have read he is gay btw. Often wonder about MW as altho' he has been seen with gf's often, he isn't known to have a firm partner. Sometimes wonder if he is closeted? Well, if so, his business and have no doubts, he has his own reasons for keeping part of himself private.

Thanks that very interesting take on the film and promise to pay extra attention to these moments between the 2 guys when I re-view the film, after over 6/7 years.

Can't find LW's contact details but here are MW's:
Marc Warren
Artists' Mail
BBC
TV Centre
Wood Lane, Shepherds Bush,
London W12 7RJ U.K.

Good luck, if you write him. I did couple years ago and he didn't reply but he might to you eventually.

reply

Thanks a lot for MW contact details. I could make a try (even if nobody replies, there is nothing to lose).

As you can imagine, I don't know if LW is gay or not. But apparently, after "NNITL" many people are wondering (and claiming) that he's gay. If after "NNITL" people see LW as a gay man, it's a good sign. He made a great job. People can't separate the man and the character. Therefore, he must have been extremely convincing playing Tim Cornish.
The saddest part of it is that Lee seems to be pigeonholed in gay roles. There is no need for that. I admit in the 90's, Lee had an androgynous appearance that was useful for him in fashion world. But now, he looks grown up and more masculine (even when he has delicate facial features). Again: What a waste of talent! He is versatile and he deserves a wide range of roles.

I've read some rumours about MW private life too. Other people wonder if he's gay (a "closeted gay", as you said before). Having lot of girlfriends doesn't mean a lot. But as you said before: it's his business. I think the same I told you about Lee. When people can't separate the man and his characters, we have a talented actor.

I'm sure you will notice the intensity of the scenes I mentioned before. I had to see the movie more than once to notice them (I've recorded the film in vhs from television several years ago).

reply

Yes, make a try - if MW doesn't reply, no harm done, just 10 minutes your time and a stamp!
Will look forward a lot to this dvd and will most definitely look at certain scenes more avidly now. Thanx!

reply

Btw, Presque Rien with Jeremie Elkaim & Stephane Rideau is still available from Amazon (UK) and quite cheaply.
It can boast a solid, truly thought-provoking story and has a sad, some would say unsatisfactory ending but similar to NNITL, makes us think and that is a good thing in a movie!
It is set on the southern Brittany coast, where Matthieu is on vacs with his family from Paris ; he meets Cedric, a local youth, who seduces him. They have an affair, then tensions arise with Matt's sister and mother, he stays on in the seaside town whilst his family return to city life. No spoilers for the "core of the film" or its ending. Haunting background music and beautifully filmed and directed. I would not refer you to any run-of-the-mill gay movie, as there are many about, but this you should enjoy, well perhaps appreciate is a better word.

It will have you thinking about the two leads for days after seeing it, and questions galore!

reply

Thanks a lot for the extra info about "Presque Rien". I'm going to check out on Amazon.

I'm used to buying on Amazon (especially on Amazon UK). And I'm used to wait 3 weeks to receive my dvd's. I'll confess my "guilty pleasure": Bollywood films. I love an Indian actress and "beauty icon" called Aishwarya Rai. Do you know her? Well, I've been buying several films of her filmography and I became an "expert to find movies that nobody buys", so to speak.

I don't want to cause you trouble but: Could you help me with a movie? I want to buy the dvd of "The Principles of Lust", with MW. The only dvd I could find (with a reasonable price) is an Australian edition. This is the cover of the dvd (in EBay and Amazon).

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Principles-Lust-NEW-PAL-Award-Winning-DVD-/190424438494?pt=US_DVD_HD_DVD_Blu_ray&hash=item2c562e56de

The studio is 21st Century Pictures and according to IMDB is an authorized distributor for Australia.
Have you ever seen it before? or Do you have any refence about it? In case you have any info you can give me, I'd be very grateful. The movie is referred as "the 'British Fight Club'" and M. Warren has a main role. It seems promising.
Thanks in advance.

reply

Never heard of this film ; looked on HMV and not available there.
It is available on Amazon UK at about £18 (a bit expensive). Not many copies left so you should move quickly if you are keen for that copy. Is it truly a good one?
Saw your recommended dvd but...it is a US import here, so Region 1 and I am unable to play region 1 on my UK dvd player!

reply

I've read several reviews about "The Principles of Lust". Some of them were quite good. Some others said it was an average movie. Unfortunately not all the sellers of Amazon dispatch outside Europe. That's why this film is a little difficult to find.

As regard to "His secret life", be careful. I've bought a lot of Bollywood movies. Some of them said "region 2" or "region 1" and finally, when I received my dvd, it was "all region". The info on Amazon is not accurate sometimes.

My dvd arrived today from Swizerland & I watched it this evening.
NB: Small spoiler follows for those who have not seen the film:
It was in English (116 mins) with German subtitles but these can be turned off.
The quality was excellent and was delighted with it. If anything I enjoyed the film more today than I did on BBC over 8 years ago. Recommend this entirely to anyone considering the dvd.
I found it even more moving in parts than I did before ; will wait a day or two and watch this yet again for a fuller insight. Tim was such a breaker of hearts, and cared nothing, till the end and he was left alone.
As his lawyer (and former schoolmate) said at the end, when Tim was cleared of Ivo's murder, "God help anyone who loves you".
On the dvd there is a short gallery of stills, very well chosen and compiled, and with Der Rosenkavelier playing in the background, haunting, certainly.
This has to be Marc Warren's finest film yet - he was exceptionally good and am sure the author would have been pleased with how he played Dr Steadman.
Lee Williams the perfect foil, all in all, ideal casting.
Any others coming on this site pleading for the dvd - it IS available as I can testify. Great quality, sound & cinematography.
This story is completely believable and characterisations often true to life - this dvd is a must-have and will be keeping book & dvd close by me, and watch again & again on long wintry nights. So much food for thought in it for all of us, gay or hetero.
Standing ovation to all the actors, director and crew!

reply

Thanks a lot for your comments about the quality of the dvd. I'm relieved (you know I'm waiting for the same German dvd).

reply

Hope your dvd arrives soon - you will be very pleased with the overall quality. You can choose between English original or with subtitles.

Will watch it again tomorrow night or early next week as had forgotten some scenes and some dialogue of course. Felt less sympathetic to Tim from first viewing it ; Lee played him so very well. Had also forgotten the senior boy at school whom he met at the opera in his home town, and later became his lawyer, was in fact still attracted to him. When he was sitting with Tim in the kitchen having a coffee, his trembling hand stretched out and barely touched Tim's then he hastily withdrew it, saying "we were all madly in love with you back then you know, especially me", but unsure how to read the expression on Tim's face then, one of the reasons I must view it again. Uncaring? Acceptance? Sorrow? Regret?

It was sad in many ways that Tim was left alone at the end, but he froze everyone out, and couldn't or wouldn't return the offered love. I must search for the reasons why. All in all, a thoroughly under-rated film which will stand a re-release internationally.

Like you, I felt pleasantly surprised by Marc Warren's performance in this movie.

Searching on the Internet, I found an article where Warren spoke about playing gay roles, his role in the movie and the way he built the character. I bet you will feel surprised reading his words (especially about the way he played "Ivo").

Daily Post. December 21, 2002.

Now 35-year-old Warren has taken on another challenge - playing his first gay role in BBC 2's adaptation of the best-selling Barbara Vine thriller No Night Is Too Long.

"Playing gay wasn't difficult", he says. "I talked to a friend of mine, Craig Kelly, who was in Queer As Folk, and he said once you get past the first kiss it's fine. And it was".

"The big sex scenes we shot in the studio and there was no problem. We had the music going and they sprayed on a bit of pretend sweat and we just did it. It's just kissing with whiskers".

"The thing with playing gay is that there's no difference really. I just approach it the same as I would anything else".

Warren plays Ivo Steadman, a palaeontology professor who is drawn into an affair with the flirtatious Tim Cornish, played by Lee Williams, an impulsive student who enjoys reckless sexual exploits with no regard for the consequences.

As Ivo becomes more controlling, Tim becomes more reckless, walking a path that soon leads to betrayal and eventually murder.

But although Ivo seems a secretive and brooding character at the beginning of the film, Warren says he wasn't that interesting.

"I just think he's a bit boring really, a bit staid", laughs Warren. "He seems dark and mysterious but that's probably because I didn't know what I was doing. If you don't know what to do with an acting job, just play it dark and mysterious".

"I think he's more colourful in the second half when Tim has betrayed him. That was more fun to do".

As Ivo is a palaeontologist, the cast and crew had to go to Alaska and Vancouver when the professor takes Tim away on a lecturing trip. Warren says he was stunned by the scenery that greeted them.

"We were there for about five or six weeks and I was gob-smacked", says Warren. "We saw the eagles and we went out looking for killer whales. The scenery was a real eye-opener".

reply

Many thanks. Hadn't known of this by MW - quite an insight.
Kissing with whiskers indeed - lol!
If you read the IMDB reviews almost all comment on how truly convincing Marc and Lee made the 2 characters as a gay couple. Marc especially brought so many deft, warm personal touches. Great actor. Notice not only his touching, say, Tim's arm then gently squeezing it. That's authenticity for you & the difference between an average actor and an outstanding one. I knew an average actor once - trouble is he thought he was the best! Still does. If only he could see Lee & Marc in this movie, he might have a re-think about his own skills! (Possibly not - ego & Narcissism stop him!)
Have spoken to a few people who have been in Vancouver and BC - all told me the scenery is breathtaking. Supoosedly V. is one of the world's most beautiful cities. Had a close friend, whom I had a huge crush on, emigrate over there 3 years ago. Lost touch sadly but when I see Vancouver film footage, do think of him, and what nearly was.

For any other person who is interested in the dvd of this movie, I'll share some details that could be useful.

I ordered my dvd on Amazon Germany. It's the German release made by Pro-Fun Media.

-Excellent quality (image and sound).
-Runtime: 116 minutes (they didn't cut any scene).
-Audio: English.
-Subtitles: German (you can turn it off).
-Screen: 16:9 or letterbox format.
-Region: All Region.
-Extras: Orginal trailer; German trailer; Photo gallery.

In brief, I highly recommend this dvd.
