After the Funeral...

I wanted to mention something I don't think anyone else has brought up...I personally believe that Father Amaro will not be able to keep his secret forever, as his guilt appears to be overwhelming. He thought he could have it both ways, but now that his actions have led to his lover's death, I find it impossible to believe that he continues to believe he made the right decision. Although his acts directly after her death were cowardly, I think his guilt will eventually make his continued silence untenable, as he is hardly stone-cold. The ultimate tragedy is that he will probably end up excommunicated for his actions, when he could have had the same result by simply leaving the church to be with Amelia.

The bishop will eventually get to know about it and organise a massive cover up, as the Catholic Church has so often done (of course everyone in the village knows, but no one will speak out). Padre Amaro will be transferred to another cure, and after a brief period of discomfort he will realise this is a manageable situation and will get organised to screw all the nice ladies in his new parish who are falling for him.
Or he may take his own life shortly thereafter, but I see no hint in his character description that he would do that.
Only father Natalio and his likes get excommunicated in our world.

reply

I don't think Father Amaro would get ex-communicated. Only if there is a huge scandal the church may take actions in order to ex-communicate a priest like him who has the full support of the bishop.

I want to think he'd change his mind and become a true and honest priest, but most likely he will remain as a corrupt and power-greedy priest.

i think the exact opposite is true. i think this is the beginning of the moral decay of the kind priest we saw on the bus at the beginning of the film. i think it is no accident that he does not recognize the man he helped. he is a different person at that point. one who accepts sin/lies/crime as a means to an end. at some point the church stops being about the message and becomes more about ambition within the institution. ironically the priest who thinks differently is the one who gets excommunicated. they will continue to cover up for father amaro.

reply

Due to the shortage of priest nothing will happen to him. Chances are if the bishop hears about this he will be transferred to another town. They did it with pedos for years.

reply

You are likely correct...I wrote this comment almost six years ago before the extent of the corruption in the Catholic Church, specifically relating to its propensity to move pedophile and sexually active priests from one diocese to another as an actual rule, became as widely known and accepted as it is now. At the time, I was thinking they'd throw Amaro under the bus to save themselves, but I now recognize that's not the usual MO in this particular organization.
