Question for those who've read the book

(Possible spoilers)

Did the book end as the film did? Or was Padre Amaro shown to suffer consequences (either from without or within)? In the film, it seemed that no matter what he did, he always came out smelling like a rose. The people who knew what he was up to were silenced in one way or another (such as the sexton who was dismissed or Benito who became ill).

I've read the book a few years ago so I don't remember it very well. But I'm pretty sure that he didnt suffer any consequence, except for the one no one knows of, Padre Amaro had to live with a heavy conscience, and that's it. That was basically the point of the book, to show the impunity and coldness of some members of the church, who were supposed to be examples for society.

In the book Padre Amaro says sarcastically to Canon Dias (Padre Benito) that he will only confess married women. This is after Amelia dies after giving birth.
