It was kind of 50/50 for me. Whoopi Goldberg I thought was funny and a good MC, also it was a breakthrough year for African American actors to be recongized at the Oscars. Will Smith was up for Best Actor in Ali, but he lost to Denzil Washington in Training Day and it was very moving of Halle Berry to win Best Actress becoming the first ever to win the award. Also it was good to have some fresh faces up there presenting awards instead of the same people. There were quite a few younger actors such as Josh Hartnett, Reese Witherspoon, Ryan Phillippe and Kirsten Dunst doing quite a bit also. The most disppointing thing I found about this award ceremony was the controversy over the annual In Memoriam tribute in which they pay respects to movie stars that past away the year before. Many of the ones recongized at this show included Jack Lemmon, Nigel Hawthorne, George Harrison, Carroll O'Connor and Anthony Quinn as many others. But because it was made differently, the Academy claims they did not have room to remember such major actress that were nominated for Oscars in the past including Dorothy McGuire and Peggy Lee. But going back watching this event, there was room for more people to be remembered that died, but the Academy just did not want to. As a result, they disappointed fans and the families of loved ones.
