In Memoriam Music

Does anyone know the music accompanying the 'In Memoriam' tribute. It starts at the beginning with Jack Lemmon and finishes before George Harrison. The rest of the clip has a George Harrison song and the Zorba the Greek theme.

I've heard quite a few people that think the music may be from Michael Gore's score for the film "Terms of Endearment". I have been trying for three years to find the theme for this particular In Memoriam segment, but I need to see Terms of Endearment again if indeed it is that music, just to be sure.

reply

I listened to the main theme of 'Terms of Endearment' and even rented and watched the film but the music I am looking for is definately not from there.

I remember the 75th Academy Awards used the theme from 'Terms of Endearment' for their "past winner recollections" segment with Kathy Bates.

This might be just a hunch, but during the In Memoriam tribute, as you said, during George Harrison's tribute it was a song he made and then during Anthony Quinn's tribute, the music was from his film Zorba the Greek. I think maybe that the theme that starts from Jack Lemmon and ends after Carroll O'Connor or Aaliyah, might be from one of Jack Lemmon's films. If it is indeed it was not from Mister Roberts or Some Like it Hot which were two clips shown during his tribute. The other two clips were from The Days of Wine and Roses and Save the Tiger. Also during Nigel Hawthorne's tribute, the music playing in his part is a little different as well.

I don't think it's from 'The Days of Wine and Roses' might be from 'Save the Tiger'? My other thought was it could be the work of composer Jay Livingstone (most famouse for theme from TV's 'Bonznaza') who is also mentioned. The problem is sometimes the music bears no connection to any of the people paid tribute to. One of the shows used George Fenton's 'Dangerous Beauty' score and I don't remember seeing anyone involved with that film in the sequence.

Anyway, thanks for your replies and ideas thus far.

It's from 'The Cider House Rules' by Rachel Portman!

reply

Well I purchased the soundtrack for The Cider House Rules, you're right some of the score from that film is by Rachel Portman and was the theme for this In Memoriam segment, but some of the music in this tribute was not on the soundtrack, but it still sounds like the same score. It could be from a rejected score Rachel Portman conducted for another film. I'll have to track this one down.

reply

Yes, it's from The Cider House Rules. By the way, the theme from Therms of Endearment was used in the 66th Annual Academy Awards In Memoriam.

I have the motion picture soundtrack and so was the music used during the In Memoriam just a score not found on the Cider House Rules soundtrack? I have the soundtrack and although there is some parts of the score in the soundtrack that DID play during the tribute, the music heard at the beginning of the In Memoriam to about the middle of the tribute is not heard on the actual film soundtrack.

reply

The music is from Little Women (1994).
