Remake or Sequel?

This movie just came on TV billed as "Phenomenon II". Yet...the characters all have the same names and the general storyline is identical to the original with John Travolta, just with lines changed around and a few scenes changed. So...how can this be called a sequel???

Wouldn't a sequel would be a different movie based on the same idea? This one is the exact same movie with the same storyline and characters, badly remade with a low budget and noname actors.

I'm just watching the end of this now, it totally sucked. Some of the script lines were exactly the same as the first movie, the acting in this one was terrible, the storyline was terrible. The first was the far better movie, they shouldn't even have made a second one.

Horrible movie. The actors can't act worth a thing, plus the story is all messed up. I don't feel any kind of connection between George and Lace. It feels as though these characters aren't real. Realy pathetic to make a remake of a good movie.

As I understand from an article I read about this, and from the interview clips with John Travolta, the Phenomenon II (2003) was an attempt to make the movie follow closer to the original idea.

The 1996 movied with John Travolta was heavily 'Hollywoodized' as the project went along, changing a lot from original pre-production story line.

So, definitely not a sequel. And not exactly a remake. Maybe an attempt at a 'first-make' or something. But of course, it was not funded as well as the original.

Still and all, I liked the positive and hopeful tone of Phenomenon II better than the tone of the first one.
Just my opinion.

I too was wondering what the hell was going on with this film. It seemed to be a really poor remake, but I suddenly worked out what was going on at a key point.

Phenomenon II is a pilot for a failed TV series. It explains the sudden left-turn when Travolta's character was just about to die. Instead, he jumps to become an innocent man hunted by the CIA...

Reminds me of a poor 'Fugitive' mated with 'X-Files', 'Quantum Leap' with a bit of 'My Name is Earl' for good measure. After all, in five minutes he diagnosed and 'cured' an autistic savant...

Pure pap, with wooden-faced Hollywood boys and boyettes and deplorably predictable scripts. Loved it!
