Mango Chutney! I resign, I resign!!

This show has been on for a few months in Australia I think, and I enjoy most of the sketches, even though that are almost exclusively UK celebrities.
In last night's episode there was a man (seemingly a politican) who missed his train, got a wrong sandwich (mango chutney) and thought Brussels was in France ("Brussels isn't in France, mate, it's in Belgium"). After every mistake, he vowed to resign.
Who was the character in the sketch, and what position did he have?

That was labour politician Peter Mandalson. He often resigns from top jobs offered by Blair - and gets a new job elsewhere.
