Why the rooftop scene is brilliant.

During the rooftop scene, the group of teens start to joke about committing mass suicide. However, during that scene, we question if is merely a very dark joke, or if they will actually go through with it. It is clear that it starts out as a joke, and the more they discuss it, the more and more it becomes a reality.

This film predicted the rise of dangerous fads circulating throughout social media (social media was primitive in 2001). Dangerous"challenges," such as setting yourself on fire, dumping ice water on yourself, etc. Have become the norm. Teenagers are willing to take the risk of fatal injury for those few moments of fame and glory - all by stupidity.

And we are seeing more and more the rise of sheepish mentality and behaviour - copying whatever is "cool." I would not be surprised if a "suicide challenge" arose in the near future.
