i didnt find this movie entertaining

my parents kept saying this movie was great and that i should see it. well, i finally did few weeks ago and was very disappointed. it dragged on and on. some people said in the other threads that this movie was a charming, feel good movie. no it wasnt. it was annoying. there was too much whining. and it got old. i wish i could slap that little selfish brat a few times. that goes for the mom, too.

p.s. i heard the old lady in the movie never had any acting experience prior to this movie. and after the movie became a success, thugs from the little town she lives in harassed her for money on a regular basis. i guess they thought she made alot of money from the movie. it got so bad that eventually she was forced to move to another town or village. what a sad world we live in. messing with little old ladies for money.

"Hey! Here's fifty bucks. Take this, in case I get drunk and call you a bitch later."

"Whenever there's anything good, there's always some idiot who makes it bad."

What the hell does that mean? You thought the movie was good until you read my comment? Why would my comment make a difference in how you felt about the movie? The movie should be good in your eyes, regardless of anybody else's opinion.

And what's up with the name calling? Just because I don't like a movie you like, I'm automatically an idiot?

Lastly, if you truly do not care about what I think, why did you waste your time and reply to my post.

Go defend another movie, moron.

P.S. At least I list reasons why you are a moron.

That kind of thing is disgusting if true... which brings me to ask any sources for this claim? I tend to take what I see on random message boards with a grain of salt...

there's always one person either too slow to get it or has no control over the urge for instant gratification . If there isn't a car blowing up or someone getting shot every 5 minutes you lose their attention.

You'll find thier about the age of 10 emotionally and mentally .

The reason why you two (Ricky-slade and sergia79) found this movie not very entertaining is because you don't understand the ways of the Korean culture.

'The ways of the Korean culture'??? You mean, it's considered acceptable to call your grandmother a retard in Korea??? That's not acceptable in ANY culture, I have no doubt! There was no need for you to single us out. I'm both cultured and knowledgeable, thank you very much!

The movie isn't supposed to be entertaining. It's teaching you something important about family. If you can't see that, therfore you are an idiot.

With a comment like that, im sure you are still in elementary school. but i will still dignify your comment with a reply.

I WATCH MOVIES TO BE ENTERTAINED! the message a movie is trying to convey can influence how much enjoyment i will get out of a particular movie. however, i do not watch movies for the sole purpose of gaining knowledge of simple family values. If you didnt know that calling your har muh ni a byung shin is rude or being a loud, obnoxious little brat just isnt cool, then maybe you are really in elementary school.

you should get off your dad's computer and finish your homework.

The reason most people are not entertained by these movies- is the simple fact that they are to used to being forced fed movies from the U.s.a.-which turns out manafactured, let me entertain you stuff.those types of movies have there moments-but we must be open to realism. The way home,is a great example of how modern day living has changed for the worst.A great little movie wickedly played by the grandmother and her grandson. And really shows that life is so much about family and our feelings towards each other.

What a purely ridiculous thing to say. That is not what happened at all. First, I'll quote Asianweek.com about their summary of what truly happened, and then I'll fill in the gaps:

From AsianWeek.com:

"The film's huge popularity in South Korea made Kim a reluctant celebrity. A website and "Granny Kim" fan club emerged. Tourists descended on her home village eager for a peek at the film's lead character. The media pounced on the story and its popular heroine."

The film defeated "The Lord of the Rings" to take away the #1 spot - by a few miles, no less. It took a repentant filmmaker, ashamed of the way that she had treated her own (Now deceased) grandmother, and an elderly lady whom had never acted before, to open the eyes of the Korean people enough to see just how much western culture has invaded their way of life, and just how large the generational and cultural divide has become.

From AsianWeek.com:

"Fearing a media deluge at the Grand Bell Awards, both the director and Kim chose not to attend. "Neither of us could go outside, ride the bus, get on the subway," says Lee. "We were hiding ourselves in our own rooms."

Now when is the last time an American or British film star (Or director for that matter) had to actually go into hiding from a 'media deluge'? Not bad for a movie, to quote you, "was annoying, too much whining, and it got old".

From AsianWeek.com:

"Relief came from an unexpected source: the national Korean soccer team, whose success at the 2002 World Cup this past summer captured the attention of both South Korea and the world."

This was the only thing that managed to distract Korea long enough for "Granny Kim" to relocate, not from 'thugs', but from well-meaning fans who had unknowingly become a nuisance.

Such is the importance of listing sources. By the way, I am terribly sorry that you didn't enjoy this film. I respect your opinion, and would not dream of hectoring you to change it, but is it not also my right to strongly disagree? :)

Critics critique themselves... just as reviewers review... themselves...

Not all movies should be "entertaining" (BTW a very subjective term by itself). I know that. Some of the movies I've enjoyed the most would put asleep half of you (Umberto D., Wild Strawberries, La Strada, L'âge d'or, The Hawks and the Sparrows, etc.)

I am not korean, therefore I don't get 100% why the characters does this or that.
Anyway a movie, book, painting, etc. In order to be really good has to have a universal appeal.

I saw this movie. Some things didn't make sense at all to me:

1. The granny looks too old to be the mother of Sang-woo's mom. He rather looks like her grandmother, therefore Sang-Woo's great-grandmother

2. Why on earth the granny is always walking bent like a hunchback? The only people who walk in that way are hunchbacks (some of them) or people with severe problems in the vertebrael column who cannot stand erect. But the granny had no problems raising his body in order to grab something that the child wanted but couldn't reach!
In reality people with that kind of problem (usually ocassioned by many years of hard work) can't do that; As a matter of fact many of them can barely work and gets tired quickly. But this nanny has the energy of an olympic athlete!
BTW The actress who played the granny walks completely normal for a woman of her age.

Putting those facts aside. I didn't felt empathy neither for the kid nor the grandmother.
The plot is quite simple and have been redone multiple times in different decades and countries with different results. (There are always two people: one is mean and hostile, while the other one is serene and wise. They both forge a bound among themselves during a journey --physical, spiritual or mental. At the end of the journey the hostile one cease to be mean with the other and realizes that he/she loves the other person)
The movie (Jibeuro) strength relies only in the sentimental aspect but the story never goes further, never digs deeper. It stays in the sentimental surface like most melodramas.

I dunno why all the hype, honestly. I have seen lot's of better korean films that I've enjoyed despite the cultural barrier (Oasis, Oldboy, The Brotherhood of War, any of the films I've seen by Kim Ki-duk, etc.). This was not the case.

However this is just my opinion. I know some of the fans of this movie might reply with insults and name calling. But the truth is that the movie is flawed on many levels.

If you want to nitpick something to do death, it's very easy to walk away thinking something is inferior when it's not. You can take your favorite song and it's going to sound like another song in a way and the lyrics are going to be about one of a certain number of things, that repeat themselves over and over every year and in every genre of music. God, Solomon said thousands of years ago, there's nothing new under the sun, now more so than ever. So should you never draw a picture of a tree b/c it's been done before or it will be flawed? It's not a matter of it being done before and it having flaws, it's a matter of how you enjoyed the movie and whether or not it moved you in any way. It's had an overwhelming effect on many people, enough to tip it to the side of being a success at a contemporary, relevant and artistic portrayal of not only an aspect of Korean culture but also a portrayal of the way some old people love their grandchildren. I think Oldboy is completely over-rated but I can accept other people see "something" in it that I can't. If I were to nitpick it I would say it was melodramatic in it's use of violence for shock value. Some people find melodrama entertaining however.

The reality of the curve of her back has no application. God, haven't you ever been to a play or live theater? There are exaggerated physical attributes designed to impact how we view the character and with this the intention was for us to find granny vulnerable.

Umm, that stooped posture is actually very common for elderly rural Asian people. Maybe you might like to find out why for yourself. A little project. Should take you about five minutes.

Why is that? Osteoporosis perhaps?

I loved this movie, original or not. And I did feel a lot of empathy for the kid (yes, I did want to smack him at times), no one had taken the time to socialize him and bond with him before.
