Another dedicated scientist a la 'Alien'

The sucker is killing everyone in sight, but the resident biologist wants to spare its life so he can study it. LOL. I guess the writers were fans of "Alien". There's nothing wrong with that, but why did they lift the whole "we must preserve the creature" bit from Ridley Scott's film? I guess it's that kind of lack of originality that sent this epic straight to video.
