I Love Saturday Night!

Does anybody remember the spinoff collection of shows that ABC started showing on Saturday nights as a way to capitalize on the success of TGIF? It was called I Love Saturday Night and it was very short-lived.

The schedule went something like this:

8:00: "Capital Critters"
8:30: "Growing Pains"
9:00: "Who's the Boss?"
9:30: "Perfect Strangers"

Actually I know that all of these shows were in the lineup, except for "Growing Pains." It may have been something else. When "Perfect Strangers" moved from the TGIF lineup, this is where it ended up. And probably nobody remembers "Capital Critters" (that's probably for the best), but it was a cartoon about a group of mice who lived the in the White House.

(The theme song went, "I love Saturday, Saturday night.")

Does anybody else remember this???

Yeah, like how the stupidly named Baseball Night in America (why?) always pre-empted the bloc of shows!

Saturday Night was a terrible night, because my parents always took me to dinner parties (think rich people, with too much money, too much time). To top it off, the hosts always stuck either USA or KVVU Fox 5 on, which showed Star Trek Next Generation till my head popped! USA wasn't so bad, but seriously, I wanted to watch Perfect Strangers. I liked Capital Critters now, but when it first aired, I thought it was awful.

I did have a taping of one airing of I Love Saturday, but, alas, it was taped over by my step-dad for something lame. All that survives is a commerical informing the viewers that I Love Saturday will return next week. I think that commerical was taped after a sports pre-empt.

ABC might've done better by having a Sunday bloc, because I was always home on Sunday nights, watching 60 Minutes for no reason. If ABC had made I Love Sunday Nights, and gave us a super bloc of sitcoms from 7 PM till 11 PM, instead of the movie, it might've survived. Imagine:

700 PM - Captial Critters
730 PM - Growing Pains
800 PM - America's Funniest Home Videos
830 PM - America's [Lamest] People
900 PM - Who's the Boss
930 PM - Perfect Strangers
1000 PM - Lois & Clark

Hey, it might've worked. I think Disney buying ABC was a terrible thing to happen.

I thought I was the only one who remembered that attempt to cash in on the TGIF fame. Never caught on because Saturday Nights were devoted to Golden Girls and Empty Nest!
