I'm re-watching the series and I had an interesting thought. (SOLVED)

I understand why Oracle doesn't, but when Huntress fights bad guys, why not wear a mask to protect her identity?

Batman did, Batgirl did, Robin did...a lot of the superheroes did. So why not her?

There's probably a perfectly logical reason to it, but it was just a funny thing I thought of.

EDIT: Just found out why, watching the series. In the episode "Reunion", they have a discussion about this very topic.

Helena: I don't wear a mask for combat purposes. They're itchy, they make your sweat...
Barbara: Your mascara runs?

Now I know! Yay!

reply

In the comics, both Huntresses wore a mask. The only reason why Ashley Scott didn't is because the show was made by Tollin/Robbins who also make Smallville which has a "No Tights" policy. They carried that over to Birds of Prey as well, that's why her outfit kept changing. They were trying to make it look more like street clothes. A mask would be part of the "costume."

reply

So that's why she doesn't want to wear a mask. I watched the series a long time ago and I had forgotten that she actually did have a reason for not having a mask. Though it's still not a good enough reason. How does she not realize that anyone can deduce who she is and attack her friends and family?

reply

That was my biggest pet peeve of the show. They needed secret identities.

reply

she didn't wear a mask because tehy didn't want to cover up her face.. a big selling point for teh show is her looks...

and yea i think they also wanted her character to be a bit different like a rebel... not wanting to be like her parents...

reply

Come on, you guys are acting like a thin strip of leather would actually hide someone's identity. I mean, Superman doesn't even wear a mask! No one knows he's Clark Kent because Kent wears glasses? Even his best friend Lois Lane, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, doesn't know its him. Give it up guys, its all bullsheeeet anyway. Who cares if she doesn't wear a mask? If it works for Superman, why not Huntress?

The lenses of Clark Kent's glasses are made from Kryptonian elements that refract light so that when people look at him they don't notice Superman's startlingly blue eyes. Not to mention that Superman and Clark Kent don't style their hair the same way, Clark Kent walks with a slouch compared to Superman, Clark's voice is higher than Superman's, etc. All of these are part of Clark's disguise. It's not JUST the fact that Clark wears glasses.

reply

Oh, sorry, I guess you're right. Since his eyes are a different color and he walks in a slouch I'm sure that one of the world's top reporters, who looks him in the face every day, would never notice. At least Huntress isn't spending all of her time at the Daily Planet hanging out with dozens of people who could blow her cover. She's a bartender, she's much less likely to be noticed than Kent would. Point I'm making is that this is the comic book world. You're supposed to suspend your disbelief. To suggest that a show doesn't hold water simply because the hero doesn't wear a mask... its kinda silly.

I'm guessing you don't read the Superman comics because Lois DIDN'T know it was Superman for MANY years. Superman and Clark Kent have two compeletely different personalities, as well. Lois can't see that someone as "mild-mannered" as Clark Kent could ever be from another planet, bend steel with his bare hands, fly, shoot lasers from his eyes, etc.

So, what you're trying to say is, you don't think that the same people that come into the "No Man's Land" bar could be some of the same people that she sees at night on the streets of New Gotham when she's fighting crime? COME ON! The fact that she doesn't wear a disguise would make it MUCH easier for people to recognize her at her "other job."

No one is saying that's the ONLY reason. That's just one of MANY for why the show wasn't what it could have been.

What would purpose of a secret identity when there is no one to use against you? It is a plot element not always necessary in comics, especially if you don't have much of a social life.

Compromising it wouldn't really stop her from fighting crime would it? Batman principle, no villain would really care.

reply

Yeah, but outside of Clark the only other heroes that do things like that are Peter Parker and Ben Rilley. Any argument otherwise is putting faith into ass pulls.

All very lame. Hair style and slouching? Change of voice? Alien made glasses? I call bullsh!t.

What prat of the mask in that image would have hide the identities of the wearer? The answer is none of them.

reply

The Fantastic 4 don't wear masks and I don't recall people having a problem with that.

reply

Fantastic 4 are publically known Superheroes. Everyone knows who they are. They are NOT vigilantes like Batman or Huntress. What Batman and Huntress do is against the law. But they do it for the right reasons. Legally they can be arrested if they are ever found out by the public. That's not the case in F4.

Why would you ever want to hide Ashley Scott's face!?

reply

I don't. I love her cute face. I was explaining the reason for Batman or Huntress wearing a mask compared to Fantastic Four.

what is more stupid than that line about mascara running? or THE HUNTRESS constantly justifying her ever-changing costume by talking about fashion? this was one of the most idiotic elements of a show i really loved. rather than spend the entire season defending their absurd position, the producers should have just caved and masked/costumed the huntress from day one. DUH.

and whatever moron said it's only peter parker and superman, uh no. take a look at the arrow or the flash or any number of superheroes CURRENTLY on television.

I agree, I've never seen a TV show like Birds of Prey that betrays the source material so badly. I don't know who the writers for this show were, but they really suck at their job. The dialogue is just stupid and some of the plot and character developments are so ridiculously idiotic is just enough to make this show pretty much unwatchable. I think this is why Birds of Prey wasn't so well received.
