Highlander Refference

Was it just me, or was Neville's slashing at Ravi with a KATANA when Nick found out he was still in the game a refference to Adrian Paul's role in Highlander: The Series? Or maybe it's just because I relate Paul and katanas to Highlander so much?

I thought that the scene where Neville dies looked a heck of a lot like a Quickening...with all the sparks and stuff going off behind Neville... Seemed like Adrian was using his Quickening moves in Neville's death throes...

....mabye it's just me but isn't highlanders scotish, and katanas japanese? how would that have worked out?

reply

yes. You have to watch the show/movies. They (both Conner and Duncan MacLeod) were trained by japanese masters at one point. Actually they were trained by many people all over the world through the years, not to mention the abilities they gain from the quickening. They just seem to favor a Katana.

Well I have to agree about the similarities when it comes to Highlander, I just caught this movie last night, and when they showed Neville with that sword I instantly thought of Highlander because it did look like the sword he used as Duncan. Then when he said to Nick, "You're a smart boy, why don't you figure it out?" the first thing that came to mind was that he said the same thing in the episode "Something Wicked" when he attacked Richie. And then at the end when he was destroyed...I agree, it looked like a Quickening, only without the blue electricity surging through him.

the goal the immortals have in combat is a beheading. for a quick,a nd clean chop off at the neck, a katana is usually going to be your best bet. additionally, it is a fast sword, incredibly light in comparison to some of the claymores, and bastard swords some of the other immortals carry. additionally, due to the folding techniques used for a proper katana, it holds it's edge for a very long time, and stands up to quite a bit of punishment. probably 100 times that of a comprable forged steel sword. if i were wandering the globe, as an errant swordsman for several centuries, i would easily see myself heading to asia, where they were making badass swords when most other "civilizations" were sharpening sticks with rocks.

(also, just to twist it some, the highlander, was a scottsman (played by an american, raised in switzerland), who was trained with a katana, by an egyptian, who was weaponmaster to the emporer of japan, and happened to be played by a scottsman.)

yeah, makes perfect sense...
either way, the first highlander is indeed a great movie, and worth checking out.

Was it just me?....or was that that the absolute film ever made...lots of pretty faces...and nothing...I would rather watch paint dry

I wouldn't say that, it had its fun moments...not a movie of the year, but not exactly a slouch job either.

I thought that, too, when he "killed" his friend with the sword in VR and then winked, like he wanted to say "there can be only one". LOL.
