What did Mrs. Stone say homeless man was doing?

I see there are a couple of threads about the homeless boy, and would indeed like to read them when I get a little more time. But until then, was wondering if someone can answer the question, when Paolo mentioned the young man to Mrs. Stone, wondering why he's always around, she gave him an answer so as not to be accusatory. I was trying to remember exactly what she said about him.

BTW, this was one movie ending that I really liked. And would've liked to see a little more of what may have followed.
