I don't understand why Katie...

felt she had to be a part of such a huge publicity stunt by marrying Tom Cruise. After viewing Pieces of April, I couldnt believe what a talented actress she is. This stunt with Tom Cruise has hurt her career and will continue to do so. It worked for Nicole Kidman because they both were young and the rumors of Cruise being gay werent around. Now its almost undeniable. She didnt have to try and be a BLOCKBUSTER actress to be successful. She lost her respect when, if she she would have just stuck to creating indie films like this one, she could have been a respected actress in Hollywood.

I completely agree with you.

Glad to see someone does. :)

I do, too, imusicgirl. Even her acting in "Batman Begins" -- a superb big movie -- suffered by comparison to that of Christian Bale, Liam Neeson and others. Just at the time the movie came out, Holmes was involved with Cruise in that publicity-stunt engagement at the Eiffel Tower, plus Scientology and the rest of it. Cruise is a toxic controlling man, and her career is down the tubes. It will be difficult for Holmes to resurrect it. A shame, because she had lovely talent.

Maybe Tom & Katie are actually, umm... gee I don't know, in love!

Yeah, I think that they are in love. I also think that he is eventually going to leave her for another woman (as he tends to do with his wives) and that she'll be shocked when it happens. But I think her career will revive after he dumps her. She is pretty talented (as she shows in this movie, but not in some) and after she gets over the shock of being dumped by a serial duper, she'll come back to that. For now, he'll continue to control her and her career. And she'll continue to let him.

I also think her movie choices, even before Tom Cruise, affected her career negatively. I miss her in movies like POA and the Ice Storm and such.
And it doesn't help that Cruise is a d o u c h e.

I do not think it was a stunt. I think they are in love and who knows what'll happen in the future. I thought she really acted wonderfully in this movie. I really enjoyed it.

Yeah, I thought she was incredible in Pieces of April. And while she wasn't seen as the next Meryl Streep, she certainly was praised by critics. I remember plenty of them giving her great reviews for The Ice Storm/Wonder Boys/etc. She had a perfectly fine career, so I just can't understand why she thought she needed to get together with Tom Cruise.

I still like her, but I had much more respect for her when she was with Chris Klein and kept their relationship private. With Tom it's like this freakish circus. It's sad, really.

Yeah it's actually depressing. you can tell she's a very gifted, talented actress. This is probably her best performance. Sadly the whole Tom Cruise corruption had to happen .

Katie Holmes is less of a wife and more of a hostage. Look at her in the few pictures around anymore. She has a look of terror and her eyes are begging someone, anyone to save her. Please, in all your holiday cheer, don't forget the little girl who played Joey Potter. That girl is imprisoned in a compound somewhere in fear for her life.

I ask this in the name of Mary Louise Parker.

Did you ever see the "Family Guy" ep, "Lois Kills Stewie" where it shows what Katie Holmes does when the electricity goes off in the Cruise compound? LOL

I agree that she's wrecked her career, it not her life by getting involved with Tom Cruise. With Nicole Kidman, it was back when he was still seen as somewhat normal. Now, he's just seen as a nutjob who has never tried to expand his range of films.

I mean, she passed up -due to his pressure- on The Dark Knight to do Mad Money. Talk about a miscalculation. LOL

I hate getting involved in the Tom/Katie conspiracy. I'm going to take it at face value and assume they are in love.

But what frustrates me is all the promise she showed that is being overshadowed by her relationship with him. I love when young hollywood takes chances and takes small roles in good films rather than starring roles in mediocre teen fare and Katie Holmes (after dabbling with lead roles in mediocre teen films Disturbing Behavior and Teaching Mrs. Tingle) actually started to do that. she did well in small roles in : The Ice Storm (even though it was pre Dawson's Creek), Wonder Boys, Go, The Gift, Phone Booth, The Singing Detective, Thank you for smoking.

even her lead role in Abandon (vastly underrated in my opinion) was good. and of course pieces of april was a highlgiht as well. then she got with Cruise and that overshadowed with she did in her first big movie Batman Begins and since then she has done decent stuff (actually liked the romantics) but it doesn't get noticed because people talk more about them than her work and that's disappointing.

Watching "April" now and you can see how a good an actress she is. She signed a contract for marriage with Cruise with the expectation to become a big star.

Too bad she just didn't rely on her talents.

reply

At least she's the one who ended their marriage. Gives her a better reputation, I think, instead of her being one of his jilted wives/gfs.

It always amazes me when people say someone's career is over. I admit, during her relationship with Cruise, her career suffered terribly. He controlled every aspect of it (he wouldn't let her return in "The Dark Knight" because her character dies).

But she's young and has a LONG career ahead of her. Besides, actors are constantly being called has-beens and then they do a hit/critically acclaimed movie and they're on top again.

She's a good actress. I wouldn't say she's great or anywhere near. She did a fine job in this, but it was just difficult for me to believe her in the role. And it's not because April is the antithesis of Joey Potter, as I've seen many roles Katie has played. I dunno. I just needed an extra oomph from her to believe her as April.
