One of my favorite scenes

I love the scene where the mother observes the mother and daughter in the bathroom, which triggers a memory of her own daughter. A lesser film would've flashed back to the memory, but Pieces of April is smarter than that - and knows its audience is too. Instead, it stays on the mother, and we know exactly what is going on.

I was extremely pleasantly surprised by this film. It's a gem of an effort.

Exactly. I wish more films respected the viewers intelligence like that.

Pieces of April is such a treasure of a little film. It's been a favorite for years for me. The bathroom scene always gets me.

I actually didn't understand what the mother of the little girl was all pist off about, then storms out leaving her kid in her underwear. WTF? What could she have done that was so bad?

reply

That was it; the little girl did nothing. She was just being a gawky little kid who needed some help from her mother, who was one of those awful people who never should have become parents as they have no patience for the helplessness of small children and end up being disgusted by and resentful of parenthood. The ironically
named Joy realized she was the same type of mother, especially towards April, as
evidenced by that cruel remark about the cheap pair of salt-and-pepper shakers that she made to a younger April.

I'm not crying, you fool, I'm laughing!

Hewwo.

Yes that part always gets me.
