This one feels...

...like an early Jarmusch (think Mystery Train fe), i don't know why, perhaps it's the poetic calmness, the music, even the cinematoraphy looks like Robby Müller.
And i like this feeling a lot, great movie!

Yeah, Jarmusch and Kaurismäki have worked together some time ago...

Jarmusch and Kaurismäki are long-time friends, I guess partly because they have a similar taste in making films. The final episode of Jarmusch's "Night on Earth" is a tribute to Kaurismäki; it takes place in Helsinki and features four actors who have all appeared in Kaurismäki's films before.

I KNEW there was something familiar about that scene and this movie! Cool. Will be giving Kaurismäki's film a second look later this week :o)

Do The Mussolini! Headkick!

Agree absolutely. 'Poetic calmness' (give or take the initial beating) - that really appealed to me, so that after 15 minutes I said out loud (to no-one else) "I'm absolutely loving this!" The cinematography was stunning too - some great shots like the woman hanging out the washing – and the dialogue was great too. Not hilarious, as has been discussed elsewhere on here, but wry and witty - a touch of Tarantino, perhaps...

"Wait till they get a load of me!"

reply

I agree
It's the bleak humour that they both use and of course all that cigarette consumption and it's not even for commercial gain.
Both great Directors, up there with Hal Hartley and Emir Kusterica.

This one feels...like one of the most beautiful movies I've ever seen.

Nope, not me... Cinematography was nice, but I found M too mechanical and lacking emotion for me to care, worked well with the subject matter however, in a matter-of-fact fashion. Not the best Aki.

Its a shame, I was looking forward to it.

But I felt some similarity to Groundhog Day as well.
