Decent Movie, Terrible Special Effects Consistency

Did EVERYONE else notice how horribly the special effects guys worked on this film? The invisible man spends half his movie appearances as a special effects-removed ghost, and the other half as a very obvious totally-seen guy with white paint on his head.
The scenes will go from just showing empty space with a jacket on and the marks of white paint on his face that he applied to show himself, then to just the actor himself, his whole spherical head being totally visible?
Did they run out of money in production to finish the job? Or did they figure no one would notice as they don't make him 'invisible' in darker scenes, rainy scenes, or scenes in transport vehicles.

The main problem with this movie is that assumes the audience is familiar with all of the classic literary characters.

the trivia section states that the production changed FX houses in post when it was obvious the original house wasn't capable

That's interesting and for a moment I wondered if that raised the possibility of redoing the special effects to produce a better film. But on reflection I don't think they could do much better without redoing the imagary altogether. I always thought the Nautilus was way over the top and Venice on stilts a bit silly. I realise that it's quite possible someone may now respond with - but that's how they were in the comic book! And maybe so, but I'm not familiar with the book and possibly they could have been done a little more realistically?

So true, this had potential but the effects/costumes and plot pretty much ruined.
