What classic literary characters could you see joining the League?

I figure the character would have to be from the late 1880s, and would need to be an asset to the League.

For example... the Phantom of the Opera for his skills in stealth and with the Punjab lasso.

I know it isn't quite the right team period, but I could always see Rhett Butler getting in there, kickin' ass and takin' names

reply

that was my first thought!!! Rhett Butler! <3

reply

Rhett Butler? That's retarded.

How in the WORLD would Rhett Butler help anyone in this group? He has virtually no talent beyond being dashing.

reply

Actually, I think I like the idea of Scarlett O'Hara better than Rhett Butler. She was tough as nails, and could out-flirt anybody.

How about some ghostly figures such as Bloody Mary or the Woman in White?

Has anyone mentioned Robinson Crusoe or Friday? Their survivalist abilities would serve useful.

I totally agree with posters about Edmond Dantes; and Spring-Heel Jack is inspired.

reply

outflirt? Oh goodness... forces of evil have no chance against her then.

Scarlett is a far better idea than Rhett (who is terribly boring) but she isnt tough as nails- quite the opposite. A pampered, spoiled brat.

Bone, it is what it is.

reply

When is the last time you watched "GWTW"?!

Scarlett coolly shot a raider then buried his body in the arbor.

Scarlett was wonderful at manipulating people, particularly men.

Scarlett has a sharp, practical mind for business, taking over her second husband's store and expanding it into a huge success.

Nothing stops her for very long. She thinks her way out of nearly every tight spot~except for when she miscalculates one situation. When one plan doesn't work, she gets busy on another.

Scarlett could be a very impressive member of the group because the average person is going to think her "Southern belle simper" is what she is. Rhett saw through that facade likely before the scene in the library.

Rhett AND Scarlett as a team could be fascinating in Moore's world. They could be very wealthy, powerful and ruthless people.

Also, remember that Captain Butler was first a blockade runner then a soldier.

Haha, this is an even dumber idea than Rhett Butler.

What about Willy Wonka from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? The story takes place in the 1960s, but it was suggested that Wonka was even older than Charlie's Grandpa Joe, who was over 90 yrs old in the book. Wonka could be the League's "Q"...except crazier...

Can't we figure out a way to refrigerate Mallomars properly?!

Willy Wonka? That's another ridiculous idea.

But the Phantom is French.

So? Tom Sawyer is American, and he's in it. Why not have a Frenchman

reply

Beowulf and Hercules as part of the good team and Captain Hook as part of the bad team.

I wondered after the revelation that M was actually Moriarty ,why wasn't Sherlock Holmes in this? Or was that another Movie rights wrangle they avoided?

If Book was in Intelligence B4 finding God,does that mean He's a Shepherd Spy? (Thank You,Spike..)

reply

Sherlock was laying low after faking his death, but his brother runs MI6 after Moriarty...at least in the comic.

Just trying to recall how long Holmes laid low after His and Moriarty's alleged Deaths at Reichenbach Falls...(took a quick look at "The Return of Sherlock Holmes"..it was 3 Years!) I remember (I heard the story-I wasn't around at that time!) the idea was to kill him off at Reichenbach, but the Victorian Fanboys made ACD bring him back..and so the LXG creators decided to do the same for Moriarty..fair do's

reply

The idea in the original comic was that the team was put together while Holmes was still officially "dead."

Reportedly Moore said in an interview that he didn't include Holmes because he was too famous and would overshadow the rest of the group.

(Loving the interweb!)...I went onto Project Gutenberg and downloaded and read "King Solomon's Mines" after seeing LXG and realising I'd never read this book.. (I Didn't see the Immortality theme for Connery's Character crop up in that book, unless there's a sequel it's addressed in..) I did notice He plays the role Bigger than the book Character's self description would have you believe, although the sweep of the story and the events he found himself involved in fit well for the backstory alluded to in the African Bar when We first meet S.C....

Alan Quatermaine is featured in a number of Haggard books, inc. Alan Quatermaine, She and Alan, and a number of others. The immortality in the comics is from a cross-pollination with another Haggard work, She, which features a "Flame of Eternity" that makes people immortal.

Haggard's works are a lot of fun and I still enjoy reading them today.

Well, the only real contribution I can give at the moment is Abraham Van Helsing, the esteemed vampire hunter. More if I can think of them.

Spring-Heeled Jack

C. Auguste Dupin (as an old man, maybe a teacher/leader/patron type)

Dr. Moreau (who dies on his island in an 1896 book, so his appearance would be his younger, "prequel" self)

reply

Dr. Moreau plays a significant role in the second LOEG comic series, helping the good guys.
