2001? Was it released long after it was made? Seems a bit older.

Maybe it just took a long time to make? Maybe Ottawa is just way behind the states in cell phone technology? Some of those things looked like the big bulky things we used back in the late eighties/early nineties.

The film itself looks a bit aged too but I suppose it could just be that it's low quality film.

It's not that I didn't like the movie- I was just shocked to see it was released in 2001. At first I thought it was from the early-mid eighties, but at best it seemed mid-nineties.

in the trivia it says the movie took 2 year to be made, so it must started in 1999.

Its all due to the all around low budget. These guys filmed it at their bar and in their apartment building... extra money for cellphones not from a Goodwill were not exactly growing of trees.

reply

I'm pretty sure I saw it before 2001. Maybe that was the release date of this version... I remember watching it on a rather um.. unmarked... VHS a rather long time ago. Then again, it's been a long time since 2001...

reply

I've seen bits of this before it came out too, but I think it was a self-made online trailer that said the title was "Kung Fu Jesus".

reply

Kung Fu Jesus was a fake trailer made by Trailer Vison.

Dude, how come no one else understand this? It's a homage to the 80 vampire lesbian flicks. The whole retro enviroment's because that, and somewhere along the movie it is even said.

reply

there's no way this was made/released before 2000

i just watched it tonight, and one of my friends was adamant that it must have been made in the mid 90's - but when they went into the "Lesbian Check-in Centre," i noticed a poster for _But_I'm_a_Cheerleader_, and another friend pointed out the poster for _High_Art_, which were released in 99 & 98, respectively

reply

definitely made in the late 90's - the chunky shoes gave it away.

reply

You know how "The Ten Commandments" wasn't actually MADE in biblical times but was SET back then? Same with this movie. It was MADE in 2000 but SET in the 80s. Not such a hard concept to imagine is it?

reply

i think the tc was referring to the aesthetic quality, or rather the bad video quality and lagging sound editing.. i think it is not a budget thing, i think the reason lies in the crew lacking experience and technical know-how

reply

I saw it as a deliberate long running joke (as well as a budget saving device) with an obvious nod and take off of the 90s direct to video crap that came out en masse.

As Robin from How I Met Your Mother so eloquently says, "The 80's didn't come to Canada till like '93."

I'm from Ottawa and it was released in 2001. The out of sync may have been part of the homage, but it couldn't be avoided due to a low budget and the use of non-sync cameras. Technical know-how wasn't the problem.

reply

Yes it was. I worked in the lab where the sound was sent in for syncing. The filmmakers couldn't figure out a way to give us a sound cue to sync it to! (Then used the Pee-Wee Herman defense - "I meant that to happen")
