Okay, i started watching it about half way through- where the "mum" was stuck in the mineshaft, and Ethan and the Dad were walking in the desert, and then Ethan disapeared etc etc...
Can anyone fill in the beginning please?....and maybe the end?! because I am SO confused...

It's basically a PG13-approved, made-for-TV homage to "The Hills Have Eyes". The family is on a road trip and stops at a diner. They find out about a secluded "ghost town" and want to see it. When they arrive, they find weird stuff in the buildings and eventually their car gets stolen and the friend of the son goes missing. You don't see whoever is following them but it's probably mutated, inbred people like "hills have eyes". They go to town and try to warn everybody but nobody listens (which means they know about the weird ghost town and don't want to do anything about it.)
In the end, the family is part of the town. IIRC, the father works at the gas station and the mother is a waitress (brainwashed maybe?).

yeah, i was totally confused at the end: i couldn't work out if they'd been brainwashed, or body-snatched....it was a downright bizarre movie :S

yes, for some reason, the people who visit the ghost town end up being part of the nearby townsfolk. In one scene, the kids find a videocamera in the ghost town and watch the footage. It shows a woman scared out of her mind and running away from something. Later, when the father goes to the nearby town police station to report his son's friend is missing, the daughter notices that same girl in the video is now working at the local diner.

The guy walks over a hill in the middle of no where and his father is not far behind him but he suddenly goes missing and only his glasses are laying in the sand. To this day, still don't understand.
This movie is very questionable like why did the family start living in the town? Why did the police office drive the guy to the junk yard and leave him there? One of those very strange movies.
