I have it!!!!!

I finally figured it out!

You see, when the people go into the town of Weaver their normal, but when they don't come out, they go all Stepford, and go to the Diner down the road. The reason why is because the things in the town are aliens. The so-called Neutron Bomb test site was really caused by the downed UFO which hit the ground with such a force, it caused the sand to turn to glass.

The aliens have the power to switch bodies with the people who come to town, and then eventually kill their original selves which now have the people they abducted inside them, who are now in those four fresh graves. Ethan was the alien in the mine trying to get to Patty and Matt before they left him behind, yet they didn't know it was him because he was in the alien body.

The one that tried to stop them in the road was a regular alien trying to switch bodies with them, and the ones that surrounded them switched bodies, and killed the Henley family. That's why at the end, Matt and Ethan aren't even shoting at a basket, and Kate's headphones aren't attached to a CD player. I hope that made sense.

ok. It's a good point of view. But:

Aliens able to come to earth are supposed to be much more intelligent then us. So why would they get attached to small things like toys and other objects? Just like having a primitive mind? And why worship that symbol they make with cars and paint on the skin? And what about the skin?Ahd what about that crashed plane?

what is your opinion?

reply

I forgot to tell you about the cars. The reason why the aliens have stolen everyone's car is because they need the other aliens to see a sign they've crash landed there. They'd made a crop circle except for the fact that it's probably really hard to make a crop circle in the sand. As for them stealing the visitors luggage and toys, it's not that they're attracted to the toys, it's that they're hiding the evidence.

"is life a crop circle except they've crash landed there"

sorry, I couldn't understand this part due to my bad English. What do you mean?

thanks

reply

Okay. They've crash landed on earth, and obviously, they can't make a their symbol thingy in the sand, so they steal the cars of people who visit Weaver, and shape them into that form to show they've landed there, and need reinforcements. Is that better?

reply

okay,

and what about the crashed plane? Do you have any clue of what happened?

reply

The crashed plane may have something to do with a magnetic force the aliens cause, thus the compass messing up, and Patti's cell phone not working, and also the reason why they continued to walk in a circle.

Hey man.

I think you're right. It all makes sense now, ...in a bizarre way.
The plot was way to complicated though...

reply

It took me forever just to figure it out. The whole reason they left out no explanation was because they thought they could get away with it the same way the blair witch did. Unfortunately, they did too much and left out too little. They did sort of rip off blair witch, okay, they did rip off blair witch. In blair witch they walked all day and still ended up by the same fallen log, and in disappearance, they still ended up back at Weaver. Then there's the symbol that keeps showing up everywhere, and the stick figures in the trees in blair witch.

I read your post a long time ago:

"The aliens have the power to switch bodies with the people who come to town, and then eventually kill their original selves which now have the people they abducted inside them, who are now in those four fresh graves. Ethan was the alien in the mine trying to get to Patty and Matt before they left him behind, yet they didn't know it was him because he was in the alien body."

You're saying the creature trying to get Susan Dey was Ethan in an alien body, not attacking, but trying to not be left behind.

This fits with some other posts where someone said Ethan really did fall in a hole and was trying to make his way back through the mine shafts, and another post where the creature that they hit at the end was Ethan trying not to get left behind as they left with the fake Ethan. I like it :)
I hope others comment on this

if it was ethan, why didnt he call out to them? and why was he walkin/breathin all hard?

reply

because he was in a lumbering alien body, whose original occupant was now in HIS body - get it?

reply

what's up with the crow, and the bird symbols, and the crow taking the picture at the end?

reply

i think the mutants/aliens/whatever have the ability to swap bodies. If there are not enough "fresh" human bodies they swap into animals (crow/owl/that mysteroius snake). As the familiy came into town, some old ones got new bodies. The "original" mind/soul(of the photographig boy) could be swapped into the crow (and vice versa).

Thats the point why the "mad" inmate wants to be shot by the sherriff. Bodyswitching could mean living in an almost dead alien/mutant or animal for a while.

reply

BANG! That could be one of the final pieces - the guy in jail, if you listen close to his theories, said "...and the animals became monsters", so it could be that getting swapped into a *mutant animal* body was a possible fate. Of course that would mean the aliens had no original bodies or lost them in the crash.

reply

Then why on earth are the people in the diner pretending to have never heard of Weaver - shouldn't they be happy to find some "new blood"?

Where am I going? And why am I in this handbasket?

reply

They are former victims that take no pleasure in 'new blood'

Brilliant overall explanations sundance7490 ! Just watched this film tonight on DVD . It's only been the second time I have watched it too but still I was having a bit of trouble making sense of all the connections with the plot of this story . Thanks so much for your subject post .

I really like your explanations. There are still a few points that don't make sense like the locals pretending the town doesn't exist, but those are still some really nice theories.

Poorly Lived and Poorly Died, Poorly Buried and No One Cried

reply

You guys are going to laugh. I wrote those theories back when I was a huge fan of this film when I was 14! If you'll notice, my writing skills certainly weren't the best ;) But I sure was a clever kid to have come up with a theory like that, eh?

I stand by my same explanation though I'd like to re-iterate on a couple of things and even go a little radical on it. Especially after watching the film again.

Let's go back to 1948 real quick. I actually believe the neutron bomb really did get detonated there after all. Because the calendar in the restaurant back in town (yeah I had a lot of time on my hands back then lol) is circled twice very largely on September 21st, 1948. The same date that the plaque at ground zero said the bomb was tested. Meaning the town's people really were warned by the atomic energy commission that the bomb would be tested and that they couldn't stay. Do I think people stayed behind? Absolutely. And I think Lester's theory about the mutated offspring is true.

However, this is also what I think happened. Coinciding with the neutron bomb's detonation, aliens did come down to or near the town. Body-switching aliens. But by that time the only remaining occupants were the deformed offspring of Weaver's original occupants. Thus the only ones who they were able to switch bodies with were them. Until more people would come into Weaver like the Henley family or the four friends before them for example. So at the time the Henley's came to Weaver, even the actual "offspring" didn't actually exist anymore. The aliens had switched bodies with them probably thinking they were normal human beings and that in the town's mines was how everyone on earth lived.

But as more and more people came into town, the aliens (in the bodies of the mutants) realized this was not the case and still had the power to switch bodies. What I can't figure out, like other people, is why the "people" (aliens) in the diner didn't want them going to the town and pretended like it didn't exist. The only thing I can think of was maybe the Henley's had reached the aliens at a point where too many people had almost gotten away and they didn't want to take the chance of any other humans possibly escaping so they had sort of come to the decision, "We're done taking anyone new. We're just going to live with what we have" though there were still plenty of aliens in mutants' bodies in the town.

I don't speak whatever.
