Books

Yes! Another thread about the books. I want to get them, but when I search for Philip Jose Farmer, I get a jumble. Which one is the first one? The second.. and third, etc.

the first is 'to your scattered bodies go' the second is 'the fabulous riverboat' and the third is 'the dark design'. start there. everything later goes precipitously downhill in terms of quality. but those three were a gas i thought (when i read at 12 years old anyway.

See http://www.pjfarmer.com/riverwld.htm for a complete list of the stories and books. Then check your local library or bookshop.

When in doubt, try Wikipedia.com. Many of the entries there are in error, but material on popular genre fiction tends to be most reliable. :-) Chronology is "To Your Scattered Bodies Go," "The Fabulous Riverboat," The Dark Design" and "The Magic Labyrinth." Were it not for the cliffhanger ending I'd counsel stopping after "Dark," but it's best to go on through "Labyrinth" to get the end of the story. I've long found it odd how "Labyrinth," supposedly written as part of one volume with "Design," is so inferior. It reads as if written much later, forced and unnatural, perhaps as Farmer was contracted to deliver the book. It's possible Farmer did a good deal of rewriting between the releases of "Design" and "Labyrinth," to the latter's detriment. Whatever you do, stop once you've finished "Labyrinth." Ignore all other "Riverworld" material except the short story of the same name.

There's a fifth novel also, The Gods of Riverworld. It wraps up what was left open in The Magic Labyrinth. I thought it was worth reading.
