Is this a pilot for a series?

Spoiler... You've been warned!

This felt like a pilot for a series. It really made me mad. It just felt like a 2 hour introduction and then... nothing. We don't know anything more. Someone could have just told me, "they made a boat and went upriver" and that would have been enough. I'm not looking for everything to be explained, just something so I care... What a waste of time.

Sorry, end of rant.

According to the scuttlebut I've heard, it IS the pilot for a series. Or at least I hope so. I've loved the Riverworld books since I was a kid. With all of history to draw on, their storylines could be practically limitless.

Even if there is a series, don't look for too much to be explained too soon. Remember what Sam said, the pleasure is in the journey, not the destination. ;)

I heard that it is a 'backdoor' pilot. That means that it is a TV movie with the hopes of a series somewhere down the line. (I think, at least)

You are right about the possibilites- totally limitless! I enjoyed the movie a great deal.

reply

It was made as a pilot for a series. Sci Fi was on-board at the beginning, but had a change of heart with their change in management in '02. Subsequently, the pilot was re-classified as a telemovie. Any plans for a series seem to have been shelved at least for the time being.

reply

It didn't bother me that it was a pilot. It bothered me that I thught it was a movie, in that I mean self contained (has some closure). I've never even heard of the books, I saw the previews and I though it might be an interesting movie. Instead, I got an openended pilot for a nonexistent series.
That's why I wasted my time, that's why I got mad.
Thanks for the replies.

-you ought to check out the books- 4 main ones in the series and several spinoff tomes.

reply

Well ... it got GREAT ratings (best ever for a Saturday movie, 2.2-rating i think). So there is hope for a TV-show!

reply

Shame it wasn't Kevin Smith's (Valdemar) voice :( Sorry that they to dubted his voice.

I was wondering where he pulled that Irish tenor thing from.

I came here with this same question. I liked it but it seemed like a it was going to be a series. Wishful thinking I guess. Oh well.

Let's hope the series does in fact become a reality since the
movie was, is, a very interesting and titillating piece of
storytelling. And ladies, don't tell me that Lucius Germanicus
Nero's actor didn't get you revved up. This guy actually looks
the part of an ancient Roman emperor. As for the open ended aspect
of it, well, let's just hope that Emily Lloyd and Karen Holness are
both on board for the series, if it gets made.

Can somone tell me the most recent new on this series/mini seriers before I go mad :((. I have searched on google for hours but onley found old stuff about it. The series is great, got great ratings and the material they have too work with is limitless almost.

I just watched this movie/pilot for the 2nd time and I am dismayed that it has not been made into a series yet. I really liked it. I had never heard of the Riverworld books until I saw the promos for this. Now I want to read them and I want to see more movies or a series! This is a great, really open concept that could be wonderful. Sci-fi channel is making a big mistake here.

Warning! Spoilers ahead!

I hope it's a pilot.

There is enough of space for a series or a second part.
The reborn of Nero at the end and the strange men, who sem to rule riverworld for example.

Sorry my english is veryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy bad...

I could imagine such a series. First you have the mystery of the hooded people. The second plot that could be useful could be the fact that the dead live on riverworld. You could have episodes featuring historical figures ranging from Jesus Christ to Osama Bin Laden. We could even have past Pharaohs, Monarchs, and other dictators attempting to resurrect thier societies too.

As with the "Planet Of The Apes" analogy, they could also make "Riverworld" a future Earth.

Yeah, I really wish it were a series. Cliffhangers hooked my attention . . . and of course not knowing what happens kills me!!! Seems to me that if it were a series that it might go in the way of the Lost World . . . but at least they got to the series part!!!

reply

I hope this does become a series. The books had different powers vying for power again like Nazis and Incans. A(if I recall correctly) suicidal Edgar Allen Poe trying to kill himself on a world on which you can't stay dead. They can make endless stories off the premise.

Just spent the last couple hours completely entertained the entire time. Like everyone else it was like hitting a brick wall to have it end so open ended. I would love to see the series resurrected or another telemovie if nothing more than to give us closier.

Just checked out Philip J Farmer's website, according to the latest information, as it was released on DVD November (or October either way recently) 16, 2004. Sci-Fi has professed and interest in picking it up again and bringing it into production, however it's not within their production schedule for the up and coming year so the latest we might see a series is 2006. Not all are happy with what they have to work with in the series, so it's unknown if it'll follow the pilot or whether it will start fresh. Either way...

PJ Farmer said it does look hopeful, so who knows. I just watched it and was quite impressed with what I saw. :3, I pray this will go through and into a great television series.

There's the link to his website where you can read up on it.

I would like to see Dayworld on the "small screen" I think it would make a great series. The book is about a world so overpopulated that peope are in stasis 6 days a week with only 1 day to live. Our hero however manages to get around this rule by taking on 7 different identities. This would be really cool!
