other good con movies

Does anybody else know of any other good con movies?
So far I have seen:

Matchstick Men
The Sting
Confidence

reply

try the grifters

reply

The Grifters was a horrible movie, nothings happens at all no action, no exitment and no suspence. No not very interesting. Unfortunatley there aren`t many good con films out there. You HAVE seen them all...Oh, wait, there`s "Ocean`s Eleven" and "Italian Job".
D.R.E.A.M

reply

First of all which Italian Job are you referring to? The remake isn't worth mentioning. Second The Griffters is an excellent con film. I think you maybe watched another movie all together but thought you saw it. To say nothing happens and no suspence...Wait!...No I've got it. Your pulling a con. You've tried to slam the Griffters in hopes of some gain. So what's the score? How much you get kid? And here I thought you wer serious about it being a terrible film and that you had no taste. Pretty clever.

reply

Really is everyone of the opinion the the 'remake' re-do..whatever, of the Italian Job is bad?

I honestly really enjoyed it, viewed as a stand alone movie and baring no comparison to the movie's original inspiration...They even reference the original movie in the movie..More than a homage or doff of the cap, rather a subtle and well executed exclamation as to suggest that it is it's own movie and not some new mini poster campaign with some stars rip off...But it's all conjecture and thats only my opinion.

I enjoyed it, but I still thought it was pointless, and was never going to be comparable to the Michael Caine original.

Yes, the remake was bad-to-terrible. The original was a masterpiece.

Try 'Criminal'.A 2004 great flick with John C. Reilly.Not a masterpiece,but really entertaining.And John C. is a also a great actor

reply

I would recommend the Argentinian film "Nueve Reinas", or "Nine Queens". "Criminal" was the American remake, and although John C. Reilly's performance is pretty solid, the movie is very disappointing compared to its Argentinian counterpart. "Nine Queens" is entertaining as *beep* - I highly recommend it.

reply

"Criminal" was average-to-good, but the foreign movie that it was a rip-off of (I forget the name) was amazing.

update: Oops, it is indeed "Nine Queens" (English version) as the previous poster wrote. An amazing film.

reply

Here are three:

The Good Thief
Inside Man
This next one was not a con for money but for freedom
Pretty Dirty Things

reply

thanks

reply

Try "The Italian Job" and "Knockaround Guys" also. Especially the first one.

reply

The Sting - probably the best, IMO
Matchstick Men
Heist
Shade
Confidence

reply

thanks

reply

Diggstown! James Woods and Louis Gosset Jr. Excellent!

reply

You all need to try Foolproof Great unknown movie there.

reply

Ocean's eleven the best con movie EVER!!!

reply

No, The Sting is the best con movie ever. So far.

reply

I completely agree with you on this one -- I liked Ocean's 11 & 12 and the Italian Job, but as a Canadian, I loved Foolproof & the stanely cup references... lol.

reply

"House of Games (1987)" -- the Gold Standard of CON GAME genre flicks.
"The Spanish Prisoner" (1997) (also with Rachel Weisz)

BOTH of these are fine David Mamet flicks.

reply

flash-126, two great recommendations, but just to keep things straight, it is Rebecca Pidgeon, Mamet's wife, who is in "The Spanish Prisoner" not Rachel Weisz.

Only two things are actually knowable:
It is now and you are here. All else is merely a belief.

reply

Inside Man
Oceans 11 and 13
Lucky Number Slevin
Jackie Brown
Catch me if you can (if you want to count that)

reply

Take these two and call me in the morning.
Catch me if you can
Lock, Stock and two smoking Barrels

reply

Hard Eight

Kind of slow flick, some of Sam Jackson's lesser-known work. I liked it.

reply

Best Laid Plans with Reese Witherspoon.

reply

Im surprised no one said House of Games. It is probably my favorite con movie.

reply

I agree with toxicavenger; House of Games is one of the best con movies I've ever seen. David Mamet's directorial debut, too.

reply

That's the one with Joe Mantegna isn't it? Yes excellent.

reply

There's a German movie

'Knockin on Heaven's Door' which also deserves honorable mention here.

Hey, I thought you had her at 'Squishy Ball'

reply

I always liked the movie Sneakers, The Sting, and there was also a sequel to the sting as well.

reply

Most of the films mentioned here are great (Ocean's 11, Heist, Sidney (aka Hard Eight, P.T. Anderson's 1st film), Knockaround Guys, etc). Those that I don't say are great are the ones I haven't seen. :)

I just finished watching Shade and I loved it. I love this kind of movies.

One that I don't anyone mentioned is Rounders, starring Ed Norton and Matt Damon. Also, the Guy Ritchie films, Lock Stock & 2 Smokin Barrels and Snatch. I also like The Good Thief and Ronin. The Score is probably the weakest of the recent ones, IMHO, I don't like it pretty much. Some good performances, though.

Also, and here I digress a little, Mission: Impossible, mostly the De Palma one, which is masterful, but also the weaker John Woo sequel which features some good sneaking around before the shoot outs (like the race track scene). Also by John Woo, both versions of Once a Thief (Hong Kong and american remake).

A genre much related to con movies is escape movies, I think. They also involve planning and sneaking around. Here I'd suggest Escape From Alcatraz, The Great Escape, Shawshank Redemption (this one is not really about the escape, or at least, we, as an audience, aren't part of it) and probably a couple others which don't come to mind now.

I haven't seen Confidence yet. Like I said I finished watching Shade and ended up on Confidence's page while foolin around on the IMDB. :-) Confidence is next on my to watch list, along with The Cooler.

reply

Matchstick Men? A good con movie? Please, don't make me laugh. It barely raises above the average con movie but it's not THAT good. If u want to see a truly great con movie, do yourself a favor and pick up Nine Queens.

reply

I definately agree. Nine Queens seems to be the best so far....It doesn't have the "blah blah" of a main character which to me, screams guilt.

reply

I must say I liked 'Boiler Room', though the conning limits itself to the telephone.

If you call it a con movie, I think it's a reasonable one.
Never thought Ben Affleck and Vin Diesel on one screen though, but actually both of them put a performance up that's way better than their both respective averages. I enjoyed it

reply

Are all of you drunk?

You're on the right track with David Mamet. "House of Games" and "Heist" are top notch. But let's not forget "The Spanish Prisoner."

Of course the top con flick is the Oscar winner "The Sting"

reply

Diggstown and The Spanish Prisoner are great con movies. The Sting is probably the best one though.

reply

The Score.

reply

we're on IMDB:select con artists, top 100 votes (not score): and voila --

reply

oh yeah, The Spanish Prisoner! I forgot about that one, good movie, Steve Martin right? The Sting was alright, but I mainly remember Robert Shaw from that movie, that guy is a kick ass actor.

reply

GONE IN 60 SECONDS DEFINITLY
ITALIAN JOB HAD SOME TERRIBLE ACTORS (SETH GREEN,MARK WAHLBERG,SUPER FAT GUY) AND IT HAD A TERRIBLE PLOT (WHY WOULD YOU NOT SELL ALL THAT GOLD???) BUT IT WAS A DECENT MOVIE SOME ACTION SOME COMEDY.
OCEANS ELEVEN WAS POSSIBLY THE BEST HEIST MOVIE EVER
ANDY GARCIA DOES THESE MOVIES ALOT N HES NICE AT THEM

DIPSET

reply

Slow down there with the caps, but good thoughts all. You've left me with almost nothing new to add.

All I can come up with right this second are a pair of comedies-of-error that have con movie elements: Clue and National Lampoon presents Dorm Daze.

Ooh! And Snake Eyes pretty much fits the con game angle. I absolutely love the way the first fifteen minutes or so is all one take.

reply

The team that originally stole the gold probably would have sold the gold, but it was stolen from them. The really bad bad guy (Edward Norton) was trying to sell the gold, but you can't sell ten million dollars of gold at once without drawing some attention. Pay attention to the movie before you post on here. Thanks.
