Have you seen Rupert Everett`s portrayal of Holmes? Probably not, I actually liked Matt Frewer. Everett however is dreadful.

succinctly and accurately put, southloop.
allow me three words in the spirit of vampires: this movie sucks.

Really? I enjoyed the movie. I have watched the few he has done a couple times now and have grown to enjoy him as Sherlock. I actually wish there was more.

The Case of the Whitechapel Vampire
The Sign of Four
The Royal Scandal
The Hound of the Baskervilles

{1}The Case of the Whitechapel Vampire
{2}The Sign of Four
{3}The Royal Scandal
{4}The Hound of the Baskervilles

Out of these I heavily enjoyed {1} and {2}. I disliked their take on {4} - but perhaps that's because I've seen so many better "classic" interpretations of the story.

Like you, I really value the series more as entertainment than some sort of authentic "take" on the character of SH. I don't think Frewer is as far off from the Doyle version of Holmes as people make out; though Jeremy Brett was easily superior in this regard.

However I found the Brett series of Holmes quite boring (though far more authentic and atmospheric), whereas I really have enjoyed the Frewer compilation. Especially {1}. I found the idea of putting Holmes in a supernatural scenario utterly thrilling - I love this type of fiction; pitting a cold, logical detective against a supposed phantom.

In sum I think it depends on your expectations. Mine were very low, especially since like most, I thought Frewer an odd choice for Holmes. But he grew on me, and since the stories and the way in which the film(s) were shot were far more entertaining (than expected), I came away with a positive experience.

Frewer's accent is a little odd. However, I liked the story and think he did a decent job.

Matt Frewer's portrayal of Holmes was a novelty for me. I haven't seen the others he played in. I liked his gaunt features. A bit like Michael Gough.
