Other recent Isabelle Adjani movies

"Bon Voyage" is Isabelle's first movie to be released in the U.S. since the (not-so-good) remake of "Diabolique" in 1996. For those of you who are a fan of hers like me, she has made two other films which have not yet reached our shores. Fortunately, both of these films can be ordered from amazon.fr. You need to have a multi-region DVD player or one that is compatible with Region 2 DVDs to view these.

"La Repentie" is a film by Laetitia Masson. Isabelle plays a mysterious woman who on her release from prison, moves to Nice to start anew. Her quest for a new identity is challenged by an old stalker/flame who wants to even an unsettled score. This film was poorly received in France and (to my knowledge) has never been released outside that country. I personally liked it. It isn't one of her best films but it does have some nice moments.

"Adolphe" is a period film by Benoit Jaquot and is based on a novel by Benjamin Constant (forgive my spelling if incorrect). Isabelle plays a beautiful widow who is purseued by a younger man. She eventually falls for him and sacrifies everything for this doomed affair. "Adolphe" is a sad film but very well made. This film was critically acclaimed in France but like "La Repentie", I don't think it found an audience outside that country.

Andrew,
Did the versions of "La Repentie" and "Adolphe" for sale at Amazon France include English subtitles? I did see "Adolphe" in New York at one of two sold out screenings at Lincoln Center last March and I thought it was good, but not one of Adjani's best.
Thanks,
Neil

Unfortunately no, the DVDs aren't subtitled. I speak French fairly well so I don't have much trouble following along. You may want to try amazon.com from time-to-time. Maybe one day these films will be released on DVD here. I doubt after all this time, they'll have a theatrical release.

I can't believe she is almost 50!!!!!!!!!!!!

reply

If you really look at her, she looks her age. But that does not make her any less stunning. 50 is not that old!

I recently discovered one of her earlier films for anyone interested... Its in French with English subtitles, made in the 60s I believe. The movie is ADELE and Adjani plays the title role of Adele, ill-fated daughter of Victor Hugo. She falls in love with a military officer on the island where the Hugo family lives in hiding but then the officer is called away and she decides to follow him around wherever he goes. Turns out the officer is a total cad though in the movie Adele vehemently swears marriage was discussed. The ladies man of an officer ends up breaking her heart and literally drives her insane. Well, the movie is good but pretty sad - even more so when you learn that its based on a true story and that all this apparently did happen to one of Hugos daughters!

Made in the 60s ?!? Ms. Adjani was born in 1955 and this film, L'Histoire d'Adele H, was made in 1975!
I guess it does seem like a very long time ago, though. She has always been very beautiful, as a 20 year old ingenue or a middle aged femme fatale.
And speaking of Isabele portraying real people, aside from Adele Hugo and the wonderful Queen Margot (1994), she has played the British author Emily Bronte' (1979) then Antonieta Rivas Mercado, a suicidal Mexican writer (1982).
She plays Camille Claudel, the famous lover of the sculpter Rodin (1988).
In Bon Voyage, she is playing a fictionalized version of the infamous movie star Arletty, whose career was nearly ruined by her collaboration with the Germans during the occupation. Arletty was sent to prison for being the lover of a German officer.
In the recent French film Monsieur Ibrahim et les fleurs du Coran, Ms Adjani has a cameo which is listed in the credits as "the Star", but it really supposed to be Brigitte Bardot who was the international sex symbol during the 1960s.
Ms. Isbele Adjani seems to be ageless, but she was only a child in the 1960s!
(Of course she might be a vampire..)

It's not recent, but I still think her best film is Luc Besson's Subway. Do fans of her recent work enjoy Subway?

reply

I thought 'Subway' was anything but, her best. Isabelle's finest? Possibly her multi-layered performance, in 'One Deadly Summer.' Whatever she does though, that sexy, sultry, petulant pout drives me crazy, Woah!!

reply

Her best must be Truffaut's Story of Adele H, Besson's Subway, Becker's One Deady Summer, and Possession.

Anything with Adjani is worth seeing, but you can't seriously believe that Possession is one of her best. And no-one's mentioned La Reine Margot, a stunning film with la belle Isabelle at the peak of her powers.

These seem like some good tips. I can't wait to check them out.

My personal favorite so far is "Camille Claudel" which I hear she co-produced.
