Very dark

I've been watching this straight through almost non-stop and the overwhelming feeling is how dark and unappealing most of these characters are. Even the good guys. The only ray of sunshine is Sam. Thank god for Sam. The only really light and happy scene I can remember was her at the dance learning the jitterbug.

The series has a brooding quality. Even the music is middle-Eastern-like, Semitic-sounding to me. Perhaps the creator has planned it that way. There is unrelieved gloom basically, even when problems are resolved and crimes are solved. No one, besides Sam, is ever very happy. Has Foyle ever laughed? I realize this is a crime drama but its pervasive tone is a melancholy one. Hard to like.

Any thoughts?

I don't know which season you're onto. In my opinion Series 1 is indeed very dark and melancholy. But this show got more and more light-hearted since Series 2. That's one thing I like about Foyle. Although bearing a dark theme, it has a very light-hearted tone.

Well, they are being routinely bombed by the German air force, the country has been devastated by food and fuel shortages, family upheaval, death, destruction, and the very real possibility of German occupation.

If that's not cause for doom and gloom, I don't know what is. Foyle was a WW1 veteran, Milner had his leg blown off in WW2. The show is about murder and war.

What exactly are you seeking from the show?

t is very dark. people laughed and joked even during WW2, but you would never know it from this series.

If you want a lighter touch, there's always "Hogan's Heroes".

If you consider this dark, then I'm afraid most of the British dramas are not for you.
