I'd like to find European TV series set during the time of occupation

Any info or suggestions? They don't have to be subtitled. I've seen one German mini series. I'm looking for something like a dramatised Sorrow And The Pity or a Foyle's War set in Amsterdam. I'd be surprised no occupied nation hadn't addressed the home front war years dramatically by way of a TV series. Resist, collaborate or just keep your head down. Nobody can be really sure what they'd do until....

One that springs to mind is "Secret Army". It is from 1977, and I haven't seen it for 25-odd years but it was immensely successful at the time. Right down to the brilliant comedy plagiarism of 'Allo 'Allo.

Thank you for this. Great reviews for a show I knew nothing about. I can't find it now but I have a firm belief every worthwhile show will return in some form accessible to me.

I think you mean 'spoof', not plagiarise. I agree, Secret Army was very good indeed.

I think the French series "Un Village Français" is exactly what your looking for. It is about a French village under German occupation during WW II - with each series corresponding to a year of the war

"Resist, collaborate or just keep your head down" that's exactly what it is about and in a much less black and white way than you would think. Actors include Audrey Fleurot and Thierry Godard from Engrenages/Spiral.

The last series is scheduled to air in France later this year (I think). It's been sold to the States, so English subtitles should be around somewhere. It's very popular and excellent. Highly recommended.

Another (older) English series is "Enemy at the Door" about the occupation of the Channel Islands. Very enjoyable too.

I watched the first season of "Un Village Français" on the MHZ network in the US with English subtitles. It was very good. They are now showing the 4th season, but I am not receiving the station well enough to watch. If you are looking for it in your tv listings, use the American title "A French Village." It is also on their streaming service, MHZ Choice.

There are also Region 1 DVDs with English subtitles available for the first 5 seasons.

I believe 6 seasons have been broadcast in France with a 7th season coming. Seasons 1 and 2 are 6 episodes each and the later seasons each have 12 episodes. It looks like MHZ combined seasons 1 and 2 so their season 5 is actually season 6, the last one broadcast. Since MHZ produced the US videos they are probably numbered the same way.

I confirm : it's very good. I'm watching the 7th (and last ) season right now. It started this evening. It's well documented , actors are excellent and it's thrilling.

and how did they portray them, overall?

yeah, I meant, mainly, what line did it take with the islanders?

'coz you know, sort of quietly , maybe whispered, in fact, accused of being somewhat 'compliant"..

I met a woman from CIs once, which is sort of a novelty this far away...she had one of those international reg letter things on back of her car..I asked her what it stood for...
'Channel Islands"

"Ahhhhh...Bergerac, eh?" (this was c 1987)

"Yes! But we are not all -sordid- as we are shown on that!"

I was familiar with this one. Still can't find it. I'm a bit leary of the church angle since their wartime record was so full spectrum and don't like anecdotal misrepresentation of that fact. It's on my list.

I'll look on YouTube, thanks. I did take note there's an episode Nancy Wake as part of Kiwis At War limited series.

Czas Honoru (Time of Honor) is a brilliant Polish WWII series and ran from 2008 to 2013. I bought the dvd's and they have English subs. Can't recommend this one highly enough! It has a special series around the Warsaw Uprising (Powstanie) which was brilliantly done, and also shows life under Russian occupation after WWII.

creamycaramac, thanks for this :)

No problem. I see that Czas Honoru is available for free with English subs on a site called 'wlext'

Un Village Français is also there. Great free site for lots of other subbed series also.
