I know they referred to Smike as 'the crippled adolescent boy', but they never really stated his exact age....Or did they and I just missed it?
Does anyone have an exact age or an opinion on how old he is?

shareI just finished watching it and I believe Squeers said Smike had been with them about 12 years. Since he was dropped off at age 6, he'd be around 18. That would make he and Nicholas roughly the same age.
Yup, Smike is 18/19, so I find it strange that he is always referred to as a boy and Nicholas as a man when they are the same age. Smike's development and health (physical and mental) suffered under the mistreatment at Dotheboys but it was still very patronizing of all the characters to treat him like his is very much younger or has a mental disability. Sure he had trouble with memorizing some lines and didn't have book learning, but he was not disabled in his reasoning in general.
