Is It Worth a Read?

I've seen the film. I found it mediocre but the story was very fascinating! Is it worth a read? I really loved Oliver Twist for its dark subjects and biting sarcasm. Would I like this one? Its at my bookstore and I've been eyeing it for some time. Any help would be appreciated

All Dickens is worth a read, especially Nicholas Nickleby and David Copperfield. Some may find the mawkish sentimentality a bit much, but I've always liked a happy ending and baddies to get their come uppance. The characters are explored much more in the book, especially the travelling actors and the Squeers family. My recommendation is to buy the book and give it a go. With perseverence, anyone can enjoy Dickens - but the first few pages are usually a bit hard going. Good luck!!

Another favorite of mine, less well-known, is "Martin Chuzzlewit". Great characters and they take a trip to America. Dickens' descriptions of Americans are not to be missed!

You should definitely see the BBC version of Martin Chuzzlewit. It is absolutely superb. Have you read Our Mutal Friend? Not exactly one of is comic novels, but an amazing insight into Victorian London.

I don't think I've ever seen a production of "Martin Chuzzlewit"---too bad it's not out on dvd. I think I've read "Our Mutual Friend" but don't remember much about it. I just dusted off my copy of "Martin Chuzzlewit" and am enjoying rereading it :-).

The book is defintely worth a read! I happened to pick it up after seeing this movie and fell in love with it. This is a "humour" novel as compared to Twist.

Echoing the others in this thread, definitely worth a read. If you found the story fascinating, also consider watching the 2001 mini-series with James D'Arcy as Nicholas and the amazing 9 hour RSC production with Rees.
