Slight spoiler question

When Smike runs away, the headmaster (I think his name is Squeers or something) comes running upstairs where the boys and Nicholas are and we see Nicholas without his shirt on. I thought that it was just so, completely random and not really required. It had absolutely no point and it's not like they were doing something that require him to take his shirt off. Although, don't get me wrong, I don't mind seeing Charlie Hunnman (spell?) without his shirt on. Just wondering what was the boy of showing Nicholas without his shirt?

If you look closely at anything but Nicholas/Charlie (difficult, I know!) you can see a few other boys without their shirts on behind him and a bucket on the floor by his feet.
The way I see it, Smike probably ran away during the night, and was discovered missing first thing the next morning--I assume Nicholas and the boys had just woken up and were washing up before breakfast. Mrs. Squeers, I imagine, would not trouble to give them anything more than one bucket to share...
Then after the boys are dressed, they spend the day in the schoolroom, not having class, but waiting for the Squeers to return. (Maybe it makes more sense in the book?)

Aha, that makes more sense, thanks.

I only noticed the bucket on my second time watching it.

I thought this was odd too, so when I first watched it, I thought that maybe Nicholas had given Smike his nice clothes so running away would be easier (for him to catch a ride, etc) LOL.

Ok, that wasn't it, so I came to the conclusion that everyone else did - it must be morning (and maybe a scene had even been cut that made that more clear).
