Good Editing of Dickens

Having recently read the book I found the film to be a worthy revision. The choices made were well conceived and thereby made the storyline more cogent. By eliminating some of the more extraneous characters the film was far more focused than the novel. I also appreciated the diminished presence of Mrs. Nickelby, who I thought one of Dickens most annoying characters. As a novel I thought it was not on par with some of his other well known works, yet still interesting. However the film made the most of the material and eliminated what I felt was Dickens' padding of the story for commercial reasons.

Yes as a fellow reader of the book I thought it was a good effort, well cast too. The mother was annoying, I've believe I've heard a Dickens expert suggest that Dickens harboured resentment against his own mother for failing to insulate the family against certain troubles, and that he wrote a few ineffectual mother characters. I've only read 3 of his books, so I don't know if it's true.
